Symantec Ships Café Java-Compatible Tools for Macintosh

Café for Macintosh provides an unmatched feature set for both novice and professional developers of Java™-based technologies

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- April 22, 1996 -- Close on the heels of Café for Windows, Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC) today announced the availability of Symantec Café for Macintosh. Symantec Café for Macintosh is a standalone, professional Java-compatible development environment that replaces the previously released Symantec Caffeine tools. Symantec Café for Macintosh includes several features not available in any Macintosh Java-compatible development tools, including a native Java-compatible compiler that runs several times faster than the standard Sun™ Java Compiler, an integrated graphical class browser, tutorials and sample applets, and the Cafe Studio visual development utility.

"Symantec Café is ideal for both first time programmers and experienced professionals. The 'Intro to Java-based programming' tutorial and sample applets help you learn the Java language and start quickly creating your own applets. The fast Java-compatible compiler and integrated graphical class browser give professional developers the tools they need to do rapid Java-powered development," said Mansour Safai, general manager of the Symantec Developer Tools Division.

"Symantec Café for Macintosh provides a high-performance development environment for Internet applications," said Larry Tesler, vice president of Internet platforms, Apple Computer. "Customers can now leverage the power and ease of use of the Macintosh to develop Java applets, confirming the role of the Macintosh as the platform of choice for web site design."

Symantec Café is a full featured development environment for Sun's Java programming language that runs on both Macintosh and Windows platforms.

Key features of Symantec Café (Macintosh version) are:

  • "Intro to Java-based programming" tutorial as well as over 90 sample applets and applications;
  • A state-of-the-art project manager, including support for nested subfolders, source code control, column sorting, dragging files directly into the project from the Finder, and dragging files out of the project onto applications to launch them;
  • Cafe Studio visual development utility for visually creating Java-based forms and applets and having the corresponding Java-enabled code automatically generated;
  • Sun's Java AppletViewer with Symantec's development environment;
  • Sun's Java Language Reference;
  • The most flexible integrated class browsing tools for the Macintosh allowing users to open multiple customizable graphical and SmallTalk-style browsers. Instantaneous access to object oriented code allows users to work with Java-enabled code at a higher level than traditional source file views;

  • Full support for AppleEvents and AppleScript. Café is fully scriptable and recordable so you can easily automate routine tasks or use the bundled AppleScripts that are provided with the product;
