Symantec Announces Internet Technology Solution to Keep Personal Computers at Optimum Performance Levels on the Information Superhighway

World's leading PC utility software authority offers first antivirus and hard disk maintenance technology designed specifically for Internet delivery

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- June 17, 1996 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world's leading developer of utility software products, today announced an Internet technology solution to enable users to monitor and improve the working condition of their personal computers. The company has developed the first PC antivirus and hard disk maintenance solution specifically designed to be delivered via the Internet. The combination of two of Symantec's award-winning Norton technologies, AntiVirus and Speed Disk, will deliver key preventative PC protection and maintenance tasks for those millions of PC users with Internet access through TuneUp.com (www.tuneup.com).

"There is now so much information available on the Internet that users -- whether they realize it or not -- are relying on the personal computer more and more to deliver them the facts, figures and opinions they need in all aspects of their daily lives," said Enrique Salem, chief technology officer for Symantec Corporation. "This increase in reliance on the PC as a vital information source means users must equally increase the measures they take to protect that information from corruption."

"This new technology will enable users to access not only software developed specifically to keep their PCs in shape and out of trouble while 'surfing the net,' but also through a product design and delivery vehicle uniquely intended to be Internet-deliverable," Salem continued.

The Symantec technology is geared toward making the average Internet user's life a littler easier and more risk-free. The Norton AntiVirus and Speed Disk technology will be available to every PC user with Internet access and is designed to be integrated and compact with minimal download time. The automated installation process requires no elaborate setup enabling the user to be running their PC performance check almost instantly.

Once installed, the user can be assured the technologies will save a wealth of time and frustration by diagnosing potential problems before they occur and enabling the user to combat uncertain computing due to virus infections or hard disk corruption. The Norton AntiVirus technology scans the user's hard drive (including zip files) for all known viruses, alerts the user to viruses and then eradicates them. The Norton Speed Disk technology is literally a PC tune-up function to check the user's hard drive structure and optimize the drive for peak performance. Both technologies are ideally suited to monitor the virtual nature of the PC inherent in Internet computing as visiting web sites or downloading files increases the probability to catch computer viruses and often pushes the PC to possibly lower than desired drive performance.

The Symantec technology will be available as PCTuneUp from the Web site of TuneUp.com (www.tuneup.com) in late July 1996. TuneUp.com was established to provide the first Internet-based computer tune-up services. The company has identified a clear market need and created a unique and compelling way to meet it including partnering with industry leaders Symantec, Ziff-Davis, First Floor Software, TestDrive and others in order to provide users with the top technologies and added-value content for its subscribers.

TuneUp.com is a privately held company financed in part by the Mayfield Fund, a leading Silicon Valley venture capital firm. Symantec Corporation also holds an equity investment in the company. TuneUp.com's management team is comprised of technology industry veterans including, Pat Dane and Michael Walter.
