CUPERTINO, Calif. -- June 18, 1996 -- Tired of waiting in long technical support telephone queues only to find that the product was updated months ago and the patch available online for downloading immediately? Or, waiting for a software vendor to mail you floppy disks with the update you need? Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) recognizes this problem and today announced LiveUpdate, a new feature that will appear soon in many Symantec products as an icon on the toolbar or menu. LiveUpdate is a user friendly technology that enables Symantec customers to easily obtain current product information, patches, updates and virus definitions direct from Symantec via the Internet or a modem. With LiveUpdate, Symantec customers can keep their software up-to-date and productivity high.
"Since the software industry is increasingly dynamic, Symantec recognizes the need for a faster more efficient way for our customers to update their own software without calling technical support," said Enrique Salem, Symantec’s chief technology officer. "By using LiveUpdate and the Internet for delivery of information and software updates, we are able to provide a convenient, timely and secure solution for our users."
With today’s shorter development cycles, frequent operating system changes and three new computer viruses introduced every day, the need for fresh software solutions becomes even greater. With LiveUpdate, users can respond to change, are fully protected against the threat of new viruses and can easily keep their software current -- at no additional cost.
How LiveUpdate Works
With the click of a button, LiveUpdate launches a Wizard to guide users through the software update process. First, LiveUpdate detects the availability of an Internet connection or modem and automatically connects to a Symantec server. Once LiveUpdate is connected to the Symantec site, the system downloads the appropriate file information specific to that product, eliminating the need for users to scroll through information not applicable to their product. For example, if a user was enacting LiveUpdate from Norton AntiVirus, LiveUpdate would locate and download all new information related to virus definitions (which are updated monthly) or any other Norton AntiVirus information. Once the user confirms that they want to enact the update, LiveUpdate then completes the operation. To further boost productivity, LiveUpdate works in the background so that users may continue to work while the program is updating.
Upcoming versions of Norton AntiVirus, complete virus protection that detects, destroys, and prevents virus infection including viruses that travel on the Internet; and ACT!, complete contact and calendar management will be the first two products to feature LiveUpdate. Both products will be available later this summer from Symantec resellers.
