Symantec Supports Windows NT Users with Variety of NT-Focused Products

CUPERTINO, CA -- July 31, 1996 -- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced plans for an assortment of products designed to take advantage of Windows NT 4.0. Products span the core competencies of the company, including desktop and network utilities as well as communications software, to assist users of the NT operating system.

"Symantec's commitment to the NT operating system and its customers has been ongoing, with products released throughout the past year in addition to our Windows 95 products," said Gordon E, Eubanks, Jr., president and CEO. "The Windows NT Workstation 4.0 promises to combine the ease of use of Windows 95 with the reliability and security of Windows NT."

"Our NT strategy encompasses both workstation and server-oriented products especially those important to building and maintaining corporate intranets or departmental networks," said Enrique Salem, Chief Technical Officer. "In addition to products for the mobile user, we have developed and are developing a range of NT-specific products that supplement and take advantage of the new capabilities in the operating system allowing us to deliver tremendous value to our customers."

pcANYWHERE32
pcANYWHERE32 for Windows95 and Windows NT is the fastest, easiest way to remotely access PCs, applications and information from a home or office PC or network. Users can make quick and easy connections via modem, network or even the Internet to check e-mail, support clients remotely, download files, or to run remote applications. pcANYWHERE32 v.7.5, which shipped on June 18, supports and works with current beta and release candidates of NT 4.0. pcA32 uses the new TAPI support available in NT 4.0 to simplify modem detection and set-up. pcA32 can be configured to run as a startup service so that the remote-control session starts at the NT CTRL-ALT-DEL security screen, and the result is that the NT machine does not have to be left unsecured when it is waiting for a remote-control connection.

pcA32 takes full advantage of the multi-tasking capabilities of NT 4.0, allowing simultaneous remote-control, file-transfer, and chat capabilities. This also allows simultaneous connections to at least 10 pcA hosts with a variety of connection types. pcA32 integrates NT 4.0 RAS connection items to create single click remote node and remote control connections. pcANYWHERE remote control and host objects can be dragged and dropped onto the new NT 4.0 desktop. These objects can be launched or modified right from the desktop.

In addition to full Win95 Logo certification, pcA32 also has the Microsoft BackOffice Logo and has worked with the NT 4.0 QA team to ensure full NT40 compatibility.

NT Tools and Norton AntiVirus
Norton NT Tools, initially announced in March of this year, is the only set of utilities that combines anti-virus protection, powerful file management and the ability to monitor key system resources under the Windows NT operating system. The company is committed to providing easy-to-use utilities products that complement Microsoft's entire family of 32-bit operating systems, including Windows 95, Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server. Technology from the Norton AntiVirus and Norton Utilities components are expected to be available for Windows NT 4.0, though price and availability times have not yet been determined. Norton AntiVirus Scanner, in particular, was announced in early 1996 for Windows NT. Symantec expects to introduce further anti-virus capabilities and products for the NT 4.0 server and workstation platforms this year, though information on exact price, availability and specific functionality is not yet available.

Norton Administrator Suite and Exposé
Symantec's line of network administration software, including Norton Administrator Suite and the recently announced Exposé intelligent server mangement product, provide proven and effective network administration solutions for Windows NT at both the server and workstation level. IS administrators can be assured that as they aggressively roll-out Windows NT 4.0, they can access an integrated suite of critical management applications that support the Windows NT environment, thus saving administration time in the initial planning, actual roll-out, and day-to-day management of the new environment.

WinFax PRO
WinFax PRO 7 does not currently run under Windows NT due to the fact that the underlying print architecture between Windows 95 and Windows NT is different. Symantec plans to develop and deliver a Windows NT version of WinFax PRO to the many users who have asked for a full-featured NT fax solution. Users can expect to see many of the features of the current WinFax PRO in the Windows NT version. WinFax PRO is currently planned to be made "network-ready," and to deliver multi-line support and telephony functionality. The scheduled release date, pricing, and full details of the product's functionality have not yet been announced.

This press release contains forward-looking statements. There are certain important factors that could cause results to differ materially from those anticipated by some of the statements made above. Among these are the anticipation of the growth of certain market segments, the positioning of Symantec's products in those segments, the competitive environment in the software industry, dependence on other products, such as Windows 95 and the importance of new Symantec products. Additional information concerning those and other factors is contained in the "Risk Factors" section of the Proxy Statement dated October 17, 1995 and the company's Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended March 29, 1996.
