Symantec Upgrades Cafe to Version 1.5 for Windows and Incorporates Netscape's Internet Foundation Classes Part of the Netscape ONE Initiative

Version 1.5 includes several new enhancements including a dramatically faster compiler and more powerful debugger

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- August 9, 1996 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC) announced today the latest upgrade to its top-selling Java development tool, Symantec Café. Symantec Café is a visual JavaTM development tool that features Symantec's award-winning integrated development environment. Symantec Café's enhanced features include a dramatically improved compiler that is now 500% faster than the previous compiler. New improvements in the debugger include expression evaluation, watch window and datatip features. Symantec also announces it will support Netscape ONETM Open Network Environment by including the new Netscape Internet Foundation Classes in future releases of Café.

"Symantec Café is a great success. Its top-of-the-line features give Java developers exactly what they need to quickly build Java applications," said Mansour Safai, general manager of Symantec's Internet Tools division. "Part of maintaining Symantec's leadership role in Java development tools is to continually seek new ways to make a developer's work easier and faster. With this new enhanced version, Symantec Café builds Java apps up to 45 times faster than the Sun Java compiler, making developers way more productive!"

The primary focus of the upgrade is to speed up the compilation and debugging process. The new Café compiler is now five times faster than Symantec's previous compiler which minimizes dead time during the development process. The debugger enhancements were developed to provide immediate variable and expression information to the developer. For example, data tips instantly display the value of a variable as the mouse is moved over the variable in the source code. Expression watch evaluates function calls and arbitrary expressions in the program. Variables can also be saved to a watch window so that you can track their values as you step through the program. The goal is to provide better control over the program and reduce the debugging cycle.

Symantec also announces its support for the newly announced Netscape Internet Foundation Classes in Netscape ONE. The Netscape Internet Foundation Classes are Java class libraries -- or building blocks for developers -- that further increase the speed of creating applications in Java. Symantec remains committed to ensuring that Café incorporates the best of internet technologies available today and maintaining strategic alliances with partners to help build the tools to support the future of the Internet.

"The power of Symantec Café, combined with the rich set of Netscape Internet Foundation Classes in Netscape ONE provides a powerful solution for web developers interested in creating next-generation network-based Intranet and Internet applications," said Mike Homer, senior vice president of Marketing at Netscape.

Netscape ONE open network environment is a standards-based platform for creating a new generation of distributed client/server applications. Netscape ONE unifies into a single platform the standards of the Internet such as HTTP, HTML, LDAP and Java, and a tool chest of open, cross-platform software and technologies for creating rich distributed applications on the Internet and Intranets.
