Symantec Announces Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- August 19, 1996 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the newest version of its award winning Norton AntiVirus (NAV) for the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system. NAV 2.0 for Windows 95 gives users the security of knowing that they have the most complete virus protection possible, whether they are downloading files from the Internet, opening attached Word documents or accessing a floppy disk.

Version 2.0 integrates a wide variety of new enhancements, focused on expanded Internet functionality, ease-of-use, consistently current protection and security. Key new features include: LiveUpdate, which provides one button access to the latest virus definition updates; Striker, a next generation scanning engine that scans for the latest and most elusive polymorphic viruses; and a Repair Wizard which guides users through the sometimes intimidating process of virus elimination.

"LiveUpdate in NAV 2.0 takes advantage of the hottest technology around - the Internet - and allows our users to benefit from it as well," said Mary Engstrom, general manager of the AntiVirus Business Unit. "To be truly protected from viruses, it is vital that you update your solution on a regular basis. Symantec has long been the leader in providing free monthly updates for your virus protection, and now with LiveUpdate we offer a revolutionary new way to get those updates onto your desktop with tremendous ease."

New viruses are being discovered every day, so users need an easy way to keep their anti-virus protection current; LiveUpdate revolutionizes the update process. With the click of a button, LiveUpdate detects the availability of an Internet connection or modem, and automatically connects to a Symantec server. Once LiveUpdate is connected to the Symantec site, the system downloads and installs the latest virus definitions. LiveUpdate can also be used to install software patches or obtain product information. LiveUpdate is a patent-pending technology that will appear in many Symantec products over the coming months, and provides a unique way for users to ensure that their software solutions are updated.

By combining the benefits of LiveUpdate and the wealth of virus expertise and response available from the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC), NAV 2.0 can promise a user protection against both today’s virus threats and those that may appear in the future. Further, Symantec is proud to be the only anti-virus company that provides its users virus definition updates that are free of charge, easy to obtain and install, and updated monthly.

Striker - Polymorphic Virus Detection
A complex polymorphic virus is often difficult to detect using conventional anti-virus programs, because of the complexity of the encryption. When a user executes an infected program, the virus usurps control of the computer and un-encrypts the main body of the virus. The virus can then take over the computer. Each time it infects a new program, the virus encrypts itself using a different scheme so that it never looks the same.

Because these viruses have an infinite number of ways to conceal themselves, the standard method of virus detection - identifying a particular sequence of code sometimes known as a "signature" is not efficient. The Striker technology, however, employs a revolutionary approach to detect the chameleon-like polymorphics. Each time NAV 2.0 scans the computer it sets up a "virtual PC" that acts as a "clean room" in which it can safely execute the potentially infected file without endangering other files on the user’s hard disk. If the file in question is infected, the virus will execute and reveal itself. At this point, NAV detects the virus and alerts the user to the infection. In this way, Striker provides airtight detection and eradication of these polymorphic viruses and keeps the user’s computer environment clean.

Repair Wizard
Viruses are often frightening to users who have not encountered them before. Panic measures - like reformatting the hard drive - can cause more problems than the virus itself and don’t solve the problem. In response, NAV 2.0 introduces the Repair Wizard to guide users through the virus clean-up process. The Repair Wizard will provide users with a friendly, comfortable environment to help them deal with the problem rationally and confidently.
