Symantec Announces Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95 The Expert's Choice to Solve Today's Computer Problems

New Multimedia Enhancements Make Top Utility Package Even Easier to Use

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- October 7, 1996 -- Building on its top-rated expertise in developing award-winning utility applications, Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC) today announced the release of Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95. As the leading 32-bit utility that prevents and solves problems and tunes up a Windows 95 computer, this new version solves software conflicts, prevents Windows problems, retrieves and stops lost files, PC crashes, screen freezes and more.

Since the introduction of the first version in 1982, Norton Utilities has been widely recognized as the best software to protect PCs, help hard drives perform optimally and fix small problems before they become critical to computer performance and productivity. Norton Utilities 2.0 allows users to customize Windows 95 features and learn about the way their computer works.

Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95 is designed for a wide range of users, from the average user to the computer professional, to the hobbyist and the technically advanced power user.

"With version 2.0, Norton Utilities for Windows 95 continues to provide incomparable utilities that make using a PC more enjoyable, and ultimately, more productive," said Enrique Salem, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Symantec Corporation. "And now, with CrashGuard and Anti-Freeze protecting against crashes and application lock-ups, the user has all the necessary PC protection."

Special Bonus Software
Norton Utilities includes Norton CrashGuard with Anti-Freeze ($29.95 value). CrashGuard with Anti-Freeze is the best way to protect the user from losing data as a result of system "crashes" or "freezes". If the user ever experiences a crash or an application freeze, CrashGuard will jump in, fix the problem, let the user continue and save the work.

New Levels Of Protection And Functionality of Norton Utilities For Windows 95
As the only utility solution available for Windows 95 that provides proactive, automatic protection, Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95 offers numerous enhancements and additions.

Norton System Genie
System Genie is the easiest way to customize a Windows 95 computer. Instead of complicated Registry edits, System Genie offers a graphical point-and-click interface with dozens of ways for users to easily customize Windows 95. System Genie helps users tune up and customize their PCs. System Genie lets users change the way Windows look and works, handles files, and starts and runs. Norton System Genie offers more than 60 customizations, including:

  • Renaming or removing desktop items, e.g., the Inbox
  • Adding additional applications to the context menus of certain files, or to all files
  • Making "My Computer" launch in Explorer view
  • Adjusting the speed of cascading menus
  • Adding an item to the context menu of Shortcuts that shows the target item
By using Norton System Genie, users can adjust their computer to work they want with speed and ease.

Virus Scanning
Norton Utilities 2.0 now takes advantage of Symantec’s award-winning Norton AntiVirus technology to provide transparent background virus-checking. The System Doctor includes sensors that both monitor a user’s system for viruses and notifies them when definitions need to be updated.

LiveUpdate
Symantec created LiveUpdate to ensure applications stay up-to-date with the latest enhancements. For Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95, the LiveUpdate sensor periodically checks the Symantec Web site or BBS for updates to the Symantec programs a user has installed and will offer to download and automatically install any updates or patches. Instead of wasting time checking to see if they have the latest patches and updates, users can rely on LiveUpdate to handle all the busy work.

Registry Tools: Editor, Tracker and Advisor
Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95 offers a set of tools to take control of the Registry and manage it more effectively. These tools are separated into two categories: 1) System Genie - for those users who are uncomfortable working directly with the Registry or want a simpler way to unlock its secrets; and 2) Registry Editor - for users who want to dig into the Registry and learn more about it. The Editor includes many features such as search-and-replace, bookmarks, multiple-level Undo and .INI file support from the same interface.

Additionally, Registry Tracker automatically takes periodic "snapshots" of configuration files. Integrated into the Editor, Registry Advisor provides detailed documentation on all the common keys to speed editing. The Advisor also notes the keys which should not be modified to avoid damaging the system.

System Doctor
System Doctor is at the core of Norton Utilities, running in the background, and monitoring the system, and responding automatically to any problems. Additions to System Doctor include:

  • Internet Speedometer: A sensor that monitors your favorite Internet sites and tells you if now is a good time to visit.
  • SMART Sensor: Warns you before your drive fails, giving you a chance to back up your files before disaster strikes.
  • Memory Sensor: Assures sufficient memory levels for safe operation and guides users to the solution if the levels drop too low.
New Benchmark Tests
Norton Utilities has a long tradition of providing impartial test benchmarks to measure system performance. In addition to the System Benchmark, which measures CPU-memory performance so accurately it has been selected by Intel 95 for part of its iCOMP 2.0 performance index, Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95 offers two new features. The Disk Benchmark measures the performance of the hard disk subsystem while the Multimedia Benchmark measures the system’s performance while running game and entertainment titles, including testing CD-ROM transfer rate, AVI playback, MPEG video playback, image manipulation and Direct 3D.

Pricing and Availability
Norton Utilities 2.0 for Windows 95, with CrashGuard and Anti-Freeze, is available at an estimated retail price (ERP) of $79. A trade up is available for $49 to registered users of Norton Utilities.
