CUPERTINO, Calif. -- October 7, 1996 -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the world’s leading developer of utility software products, has launched Healthy PC which runs a complete PC maintenance routine at the click of a mouse. In less than five minutes, Healthy PC reports on virus detection and removal, hard drive fragmentation including lost clusters and disk file arrangement, and file management in case of a computer crash.
Inexperienced users now have a "click-and-forget" tool to protect their PC Hardware investment, and also to protect valuable data such as financial records, e.g., Quicken files. With one mouse click, Healthy PC detects and fixes small problems before they become big ones. Making the PC run faster and more efficiently, the program detects and removes viruses and tunes up the hard drive by arranging files for faster access. It also includes comprehensive on-line help for answers to frequently-asked questions. The "push-button" metaphor requires no learning curve, no thick manual to read, no new jargon to learn.
"Bringing our heritage in the development of utility products to the consumer market, we created Healthy PC specifically for the new Windows 95 computer user," said Mary Engstrom, general manager of Symantec’s security business unit. "We believe that Healthy PC offers the essential utilities to ensure a safe and productive computing experience for novice users."
How Healthy PC Works
With the growing number of first-time PC buyers using Windows 95, many computer owners are experiencing problems which can be quickly fixed with Healthy PC. The program’s unconventional graphical, oval-shaped interface provides a totally new and non-intimidating experience to users who are uncomfortable with the more traditional software designs, such as pull-down menus and check-boxes. On this intuitive user interface, virus scanning and the hard disk optimizing process is literally as simple as clicking the "Start" button. The program provides a graphic list of areas that it is checking and provides a quick summary report on the "health" of the PC.
Healthy PC combines the benefits of two of Symantec’s best-selling problem solving programs - Norton AntiVirus and Speed Disk - in one utility program. For problems that Healthy PC uncovers which it cannot repair, the program points users to other resources to resolve them. Healthy PC also features "LiveUpdate": one button access to the latest virus definition updates. In an environment where 3-6 new viruses are being written each day, this updated protection is vital to the health of a user’s PC data. LiveUpdate connects users to Symantec via modem or Internet connection and provides users with new virus protection updates and automatic software enhancements.
Pricing and Availability
Healthy PC from Symantec is available at mass market outlets and consumer electronics chains, as well as computer stores nationwide, including Best Buy, Comp USA, Computer City and Egghead Software. It has an estimated retail price (ERP) of $29.95. Healthy PC requires an IBM-PC or 100% compatible, Windows 9x Build 950 (FAT-32 support update available via LiveUpdate), Intel 386 DX or higher processor, 4MB or RAM (8MB recommended), 3MB of free hard-disk space, VGA display with at least 256 colors, modem or Internet connection (for using LiveUpdate), mouse.
