CUPERTINO, Calif. –- November 6, 1996 -– In response to an overwhelming number of users who turn to the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) for online virus information, Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC), the leader in anti-virus software, today announced that its industry-leading family of Norton AntiVirus products can be purchased online at Symantec’s Web site.
Effective immediately, users can purchase full versions of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95, Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT, Norton AntiVirus 3.0 for DOS/Windows 3.x, and Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh (SAM) 4.5 at the company’s Web site at www.symantec.com. And in an effort to make evaluating an anti-virus product as easy as possible, Symantec is offering full-featured "try before you buy" versions of its anti-virus software. Current trial versions are valid until November 30, 1996.
"While the Internet has opened up new opportunities for sharing information, it has also been a significant contributor to the rapid spread of viruses. So it makes sense to provide the anti-virus solution online - close to where users are encountering the problem," said Mary Engstrom, general manager of the AntiVirus Business Unit at Symantec Corporation.
"By providing a free trial of our anti-virus solutions, we hope to demonstrate for people just how easy it is to protect themselves and their data from viruses," Engstrom continued. "We particularly want to give users the opportunity to try our revolutionary LiveUpdate feature for themselves, and see how Symantec has combined the power of the Internet and the ease of point-and-click to deliver current virus protection."
Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 and Windows NT feature LiveUpdate: one button access to virus definition updates. LiveUpdate detects the availability of an Internet connection or modem, and automatically connects to a Symantec server. Once LiveUpdate is connected to the Symantec site, the system downloads and installs the latest virus definitions. By combining the power of SARC with the ease of LiveUpdate, and making these updates available for no charge (other than normal phone and Internet access charges), users of Norton AntiVirus can rest assured that they have the most current protection available. LiveUpdate is a patent-pending technology that will appear in many Symantec products over the coming months, and it provides a unique way for users to ensure that their software solutions are updated. SAM has a similar feature called AutoUpdate.
Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC)
The Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) has a dedicated team of virus experts whose sole mission is to provide swift, global responses to computer virus threats, proactively research and develop technologies that eliminate such threats, and educate the public on safe computing practices. SARC also maintains Symantec’s anti-virus Web presence (www.symantec.com/avcenter) and posts updates regularly.
