CUPERTINO, Calif. --January 27, 1997–- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC) today announced Norton Utilities for Windows NT (NU/NT), designed to maximize end-user performance by providing the most stable and robust Windows NT 4.0 computing environment available. Norton Utilities for Windows NT automatically prevents problems on Windows NT and increases Windows NT performance.

“Now NT workstation and server users can enjoy the same full protection of Norton Utilities that DOS and Windows users are used to,” said Enrique Salem, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Symantec Corporation. “The new Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk have been built from the ground up especially for the Windows NT platform.”

Automatically Prevents Problems on Windows NT
The new System Doctor continuously monitors the workstation or server, anticipating potential problems and fixing them automatically before they cause a system crash or data loss. NU/NT protects workstation files by protecting the underlying resources, e.g., memory, disk space, etc. Several new sensors in NU/NT offer unique preventive maintenance, monitoring the hard disk for disk problems, viruses, fragmentation and other problems. The user does not have to know which utility to invoke - System Doctor knows and runs programs as needed.

The Internet Speedometers shows what kind of turnaround time a user is experiencing on a favorite web site. System Doctor will monitor both the connection and the site, letting the user know when it’s a good time to surf the net. System Doctor also supplies performance information on other Windows NT 4.0 systems on the network and can be set to monitor any workstation on the network and tell when a users’ system needs to be upgraded or checked. The number of users connected to a workstation can also be tracked. Norton Utilities’ for Windows NT 4.0 SMART (Self-Monitoring and Reporting Technology) sensor will warn the user before a physical hard drive failure occurs, allowing a back up of critical data before it’s lost.

Repairs and Protects the Workstation
Norton Disk Doctor performs hard disk diagnostics and repair operations on both FAT 16 and NTFS drives, detecting and correcting almost any type of hard disk problem. Consultants and MIS departments can use the Custom Message feature which lets them customize repair options, choosing which repairs to make automatically and which repairs might require Help Desk support.

Norton Protection/UnErase keeps Windows NT files safe even when overwritten by other applications or deleted from the DOS box. Norton Protection runs in the background, monitoring all file deletions and moving deleted files that the Recycle Bin doesn’t see to NU/NT’s Protected Recycle Bin. UnErase is then able to recover the files as needed. Norton Protection dynamically manages disk space, using all available space to protect as many files as possible, then freeing up space as needed for other files by selectively removing the oldest files. Additionally, the UnErase Wizard can recover files unprotected by either the Recycle Bin or Norton Protection, including files on network drives protected by Novell’s Salvage.

Easily Tunes Up the Windows NT 4.0 System
Norton Speed Disk is a must have for any Windows NT server or workstation, since Windows NT itself does not include a defragmenter and the NTFS file system does become fragmented. Speed Disk improves system performance by defragmenting the files and free space on the hard disk. System Doctor automatically monitors the fragmentation on the hard drive and notifies the user when the drive needs to be optimized.

Speed Disk supports both FAT 16 and NTFS file systems and can be selected to run continuously in the background with System Doctor launching Speed Disk as needed. Speed Disk allows smooth multi-tasking, unobtrusively optimizing the hard disk while the user continues to work. Speed Disk can continue the defragmentation process without starting over, even when the user accesses and writes to the hard drive.

Supplies Vital Workstation Information
Norton System Information can give the user comprehensive information about his system. In addition to component information, such as CPU and BIOS information, System Information gives the user a status report on disk space usage, memory usage, network information, multimedia components and printer and display details. This information can be collected in a series of reports and printed or mailed to technical support when a detailed configuration is required.

Leading-Edge Technology for High-End Technical Users
Norton Utilities for Windows NT 4.0 is a comprehensive package which provides high-end users access to the tools they need. Norton Speed Disk, Norton Disk Doctor, Norton System Doctor, Norton Protection/UnErase and Norton System Information work in tandem to provide inclusive information, support and automatic protection of the Windows NT 4.0 workstation. Scientists, developers, statisticians, financial workstation users, medical workstation users, and MIS/IS professionals who work on Windows NT 4.0 platform will find that NU/NT will optimize and speed system performance, recover accidentally erased files and repair hard problems, making the NT system perform at top level.

Live Update
Live Update is new technology that lets users automatically update any Symantec software. Click a button and Live Update determines what Symantec software the user is running, connects the user to the World Wide Web or the dedicated Live Update servers and updates all the user’s Symantec applications – it’s fast and easy to use.

Microsoft Logo Certification
Symantec is committed to supporting Microsoft’s logo requirements, acknowledging that the BackOffice logo is critical to its customers. Norton Utilities for Windows NT 4.0 carries the “Designed for Microsoft BackOffice” logo.
