Symantec Appoints Bain as Vice President of Worldwide Operations and CFO and Appoints Dykes to Symantec's Board of Directors

CUPERTINO, Calif. --February 6, 1997-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the appointment of Howard Bain III, 50, to Vice President, Worldwide Operations and Chief Financial Officer. Effective today, Mr. Bain reports to President and CEO Gordon E. Eubanks, Jr.

"I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Howard to my Executive Staff. He has demonstrated a high level of reliability and leadership as our Vice President of Finance and I look forward to his future contributions to the senior management team," said Mr. Eubanks.

Mr. Bain has over twenty-five years of experience in all phases of corporate operations. He has been Symantec's Vice President of Finance for the last 5 years. During the 10 years prior to joining Symantec in 1991, he served as CFO for a number of entrepreneurial technology companies in the semiconductor, semiconductor capital equipment, large screen video/graphics display and computer disk drive industries. His previous experience includes senior financial and accounting management positions with Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corporation and as a consultant with Arthur Andersen & Company.

Mr. Bain is a CPA and hold a B.S. in Business from California Polytechnic University.

Symantec also announced today that Robert Dykes, 47, will be appointed to Symantec's Board of Directors. After eight years with Symantec, most recently as the Executive Vice President of Worldwide Operations and Chief Financial Officer, Bob will be leaving for a new position with Flextronics International. "Bob has made tremendous contributions to Symantec, and we know he will continue to do so as a member of our board of directors," said Mr. Eubanks.

Prior to joining Symantec, Mr. Dykes was vice president of finance and corporate development at Adept Technology, Inc. a robotics firm. He oversaw all financial and human resource procedures and developed venture capital and funding strategies from 1984 to 1988. Mr. Dykes also served as executive vice president of finance and administration at Xebec Corporation, responsible for all financial, legal and administrative matters. Mr. Dykes started his career while with Ford Motor Company from 1971 to 1983 where he held various financial management positions.
