Demo 97, Palm Springs, CA --February 10, 1997-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the industry leader in remote communication software, today unveiled pcANYWHERE CE, new remote access communications software designed specifically for the new Microsoft Windows CE operating system. pcANYWHERE CE is the first handheld software to remotely access files, applications and information from a PC in a remote location using a Windows CE-based handheld PC (H/PC). pcANYWHERE CE allows users to quickly find and use information, run applications and transfer text to and from their desktop PC.
"Most of us are familiar with the operations and benefits of the TV remote control, the garage door opener, pagers, and the cellular phone," said Christopher Calisi, Vice President of the Remote Productivity Solutions Business Unit at Symantec. "pcANYWHERE CE is the first handheld PC remote control software. For a mobile professional who wants to quickly send e-mail with attachments, check out any web site at full network speed while on the road, or an IS professional who needs to fix an NT server across the country--pcANYWHERE CE on an H/PC is the ideal solution."
"As the H/PC emerges this year, software solutions that increase users productivity are the key to success," comments Tim Bajarin, President of Creative Strategies of San Jose, CA. "I am impressed with the innovative viewing technologies that have been specifically developed for pcANYWHERE CE. This product is going to be key in building interest and acceptance for this new platform."
Now with support for the brand new Windows CE platform (connecting to a Windows 95 or Windows NT pcA32 Host), pcANYWHERE CE running on a Windows CE-based H/PC will truly provide users with an "information anywhere" tool. This will bring users expanded access to their information without the need to carry around a 10 lb. notebook PC.
"Symantec has developed an application which is a tremendous asset to the Windows CE handheld platform," said Jon Magill, director of marketing, consumer appliance group at Microsoft Corp. "The mobility of Windows CE and its memory storage limitations allow pcANYWHERE CE to fill the users' need for immediate access to all their information."

About Windows CE-based Handheld PCs
The handheld PC (H/PC) is a new category of mobile companion devices for Microsoft Windows -based PCs developed from the Microsoft Windows CE operating system platform. H/PCs are designed to provide the millions of mobile professionals using Windows-based personal computers an affordable, easy-to-use mobile PC companion to keep their most important information up-to-date and close at hand. All H/PCs have a sleek clamshell design, weigh under sixteen ounces and fit comfortably in a jacket pocket or purse. Base specifications for the device are approximately 7" long by 4" wide. While H/PCs share these basic characteristics, the various computer and consumer electronics manufacturers differentiate their handheld PC offerings with a variety of display, form factor, peripheral and packaged software options, allowing users to choose the configuration best suited to their individual needs.
The first H/PCs went on sale in North America in late November 1996. H/PC devices from additional OEMs are expected to roll out over the coming months with international versions expected before the second half of 1997. While there is no suggested retail price for the handheld PC with Windows CE, street prices for base configurations are expected to start around $500. Some of the leading computer and consumer electronics manufacturers that are developing and manufacturing handheld PCs include: Casio Computer Co., Compaq Computer Co., Hewlett-Packard Co., Hitachi Ltd., LG Electronics, NEC Corp. and Philips Electronics.
About Microsoft Windows CE
Microsoft Windows CE is an open, scaleable Windows platform for a broad range of communications, entertainment and mobile-computing devices including the H/PC. The standards-based Windows CE platform is an entirely new operating system built from the ground up to make possible new categories of business and consumer non-PC devices that can communicate with each other, share information with Windows-based PCs, and connect to the Internet. Windows CE makes the H/PC easy to learn and use, with a user interface incorporating many elements of the familiar Windows 95 interface.
