Symantec Announces the Opening of the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) News Bureau for the Media

Symantec Provides Comprehensive Information Center for Media to Access Latest Computer Virus News, Technology and Information

CUPERTINO, Calif. --February 10, 1997-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world’s leading supplier of utilities and anti-virus software products today announced the opening of the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) News Bureau, an information center for the media only, which grants access to the latest information pertaining to computer virus threats and antivirus protection. Editors and producers will be able to contact the SARC News Bureau via a special toll-free 1-888 number to obtain information on topical issues such as computer virus threats, virus alerts, education and awareness, anti-virus protection, research on new platforms and vulnerabilities, technology and easy anti-virus protection through Norton AntiVirus products and Live Update.

According to the SARC, three to six new computer viruses are discovered every day and, of those, there are an alarming number of new macro viruses. Researchers have documented 259 macro viruses as of February 1997, a significant increase since August 1996, when there were only 42. Of these, 252 viruses have been documented for Word, while 7 have been found in Excel documents. Norton AntiVirus products give users the security of knowing that they have the most complete virus protection possible, whether they are downloading files from the Internet, opening e-mail attached Word documents or accessing floppy disks.

“Today, with more virus threats, resulting from increased communications via the Internet, it is critically important for our customers to be protected. Therefore, anything we can do to assist the media in disseminating information to the public is in everyone’s best interest.” said Alex Haddox, Product Manager for the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC). “By offering the media a 1-888 toll-free number for easy access to SARC spokespersons, they will be able to obtain the very latest information on viruses and we will be able to spread the word and help educate and protect the public.”

Media will soon receive a complete SARC News Bureau package including SARC media kits with the latest information on viruses and anti-virus products, a listing of topics with designated SARC spokespersons per topic, and rolodex cards with the special 1-800 number to the media. Media may also contact Kristin Gabriel, PR Manager, to obtain the 1-800 telephone number. SARC Newsletters will also be mailed to the media on a monthly basis, as will other newsworthy, technology information pertaining to computer viruses.
