CUPERTINO, Calif. --March 24, 1997-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world’s leading supplier of utilities and anti-virus software today announced that three of its products including Norton Utilities for Windows 95, Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 2.0 for Windows 95 and Internet FastFind have received PC Magazine’s prestigious Editors’ Choice awards as cited in The 1997 Utility Guide, April 8, 1997 issue. Symantec’s Norton Utilities for Windows 95 was recognized with an overall Editors’ Choice among the Utilities category and is designated by PC Magazine as “an essential you shouldn’t be without ...”
“The fact that PC Magazine has chosen three of Symantec’s leading utilities and anti-virus products again this year simply confirms our leadership role in the utilities software arena,” said Enrique Salem, Vice President of Symantec’s Securities and Assistance Business Unit. “We are also very proud of these Editors’ Choice awards because they reassure customers that Symantec is making a serious commitment to the quality and currency of its products.” The 1996 PC Data Hits List of Top Selling Software listed Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 as the number two best-selling product among U.S. retail channels, second only to Windows 95 sales.
According to the publication, “Norton Utilities for Windows 95 is the latest version of a package that has been considered essential since the beginning of the desktop computing revolution.” Further, in summing up the Antivirus Utilities category, the PC Magazine Editors’ Choice review states, “Like most of the products tested, NAV is certified by the NCSA to protect against known viruses, and it performed as billed. Test results alone don’t set NAV apart, but its clean, easy-to-use interface remains impressive.” Under the category of OffLine Search Tools, PC Magazine found that Internet FastFind delivers the most complete set of components when searching the Web including “a good interface to make the package easy to use.”
Since PC Magazine implemented its current review system, thousands of products have been put through its rigorous performance tests annually. This year in the Antivirus Utilities category, Norton AntiVirus for Windows received a 100% rating from PC Magazine in detection and repair capabilities, posting perfect scores on the Wild List, boot-sector, and macro-repair tests. According to the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC), six to nine new computer viruses are discovered every day and, of those, there are an alarming number of new macro viruses which infect word processing and spreadsheet documents. Researchers have documented 369 macro viruses in early March 1997, a significant eight-fold increase from August 1996, when there were only 42. Of these, 360 viruses have been documented for Word, while 7 have been found in Excel documents. According to the National Computer Security Association (NCSA) since 1995, computer viruses have cost companies in the U.S. nearly $2 billion in lost data, repair costs, loss of productivity and more. Norton AntiVirus products give users the security of knowing that they have the most complete virus protection possible, whether they are downloading files from the Internet, opening e-mail attached Word documents or accessing floppy disks.
