CUPERTINO, Calif. --April 7, 1997-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the leading provider of Java development environments, announced today that Symantec's Visual Café Pro has won the Software Development JOLT Product Excellence Award for Best Languages and Development Environment. Presented at an elaborate awards ceremony during Software Development West 97, the editors gave their most coveted award to Symantec for Best Languages and Development Environment. Visual Café Pro has been honored with this prestigious award because it has "jolted" the industry as a superior JavaTM development tool.
"In the software development industry, a Jolt Product Excellence Award is one of the top awards a product can receive - it's like receiving an OSCAR," said Mansour Safai, general manager of Symantec's Internet Tools Division. "We are truly honored that Visual Café Pro has been singled out by the editors at Software Development to receive this prestigious award. We have established our leadership position in the Java development tools market by delivering superior tools designed specifically for Internet development."
Since 1991, Software Development, the magazine for corporate software developers, has acknowledged the best software development products released in the previous year with the Software Development JOLT Product Excellence Award. A team of twenty-five judges selected from the various Miller Freeman high technology publications' editors and writers formed the panel that reviewed the products. The categories are: books, languages and development environments, a"special" catch-all category, and new in 1997, a "hall of fame" category for multiple year winners. The three runners-up in each category receive the Software Development Productivity Award.
The Product Excellence Award is co-sponsored by Jolt Cola of Rochester, NY, a soft drink purported to be consumed by software developers needing that late-night boost to finish their complex projects.
Visual Café Pro is the only fully-integrated Visual Rapid Application Development tool for Java and database application solutions and provides distributed database access from anywhere on the Web using only a Java-enabled browser. Visual Café Pro allows web developers to quickly and easily create thin Java applets and applications that can access existing relational databases, using innovative database wizards and pre-build Java Beans components. Included in VisualCafé Pro is dbANYWHERE, a middleware database application server technology that allows Java programs to access corporate databases over the Internet using JavaSoft's JDBC API. dbANYWHERE provides the scalability and security of a three-tier solution with the ease of development and implementation of a two-tier solution.
