CUPERTINO, Calif. --May 12, 1997--Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced a new version of Norton Utilities for Macintosh (NUM) 3.5, the number-one selling Macintosh utility available for Macintosh and Power Macintosh machines. With new Norton CrashGuard, faster Speed Disk, Apple Guide Support and a new bootable CD-ROM, Norton Utilities for Macintosh 3.5 delivers everything to help protect data and fix computer problems on one disk.

"This new version of NUM gives our customers increased protection from data loss," said Enrique Salem, Vice President, Security and Assistance Business Unit at Symantec. "Only Norton Utilities offers comprehensive data protection. It scans for disk errors in the background and automatically notifies users when maintenance is recommended. If disaster strikes, NUM includes tools needed for complete data recovery and disk repair."

NAME="crashguard">New Norton Crashguard
New Norton CrashGuard keeps users headache-free by stopping most crashes from taking down their Power Macintosh. This feature allows users to save data from a crashed application so work is not automatically lost. It also reduces the need to restart the system every time a crash occurs. Norton CrashGuard also keeps track of when crashes happen, which application has crashed, and why it crashed to help determine the cause and take action to prevent future crashes.

NAME="bootcd">New Bootable CD-ROM
For the first time ever, Norton Utilities for Macintosh offers everything to make a Macintosh run smoothly on one CD. The bootable CD-ROM can even make startup disks for many older Macintosh machines that have no CD drive. The Emergency Disk included in NUM 3.5 will boot 68K machines in an emergency, so even older machines can be protected. The CD insert also includes emergency instructions and an overview of NUM.

NAME="speedd">Faster Speed Disk
The new version of this disk optimization feature now runs faster which frees time for computers to work on other things. This version also defragments individual files. Large, important files can be optimized quickly to insure they run better and faster.

Speed Disk Profiles can customize the optimization so work environments best suit the job at hand. Profiles include General Use which places similar file types together; CD-ROM Mastering which optimizes and places all files at the front of the disk; Software Development groups project files and source files to free space. Other profiles include Multimedia, which maximizes contiguous free space; Recently Used Files, which optimizes recently used files; Disk Resizing, which moves all files to the front of the disk so it is easier to resize a partition; and Speed Disk 3.2, which is the classic Speed Disk file arrangement. New Speed Disk is also scriptable and recordable via AppleScript to automate important, regular procedures.

NAME="appleguide">New Apple Guide Support
New Apple Guides give complete support for all utilities so NUM is easy to use and understand. Scripted Guides give step-by-step instructions on running each of the utilities and show the process of using NUM on Macintosh machines, so even beginners find the product easy to use.

Disk Repair, Recovery, and Maintenence
Norton Disk Doctor and Disk Editor provide fast, extensive disk scanning to inspect and repair hard disk drives and floppy disks. Disk Doctor locates and repairs bad blocks and repairs low-level areas of the disk. Norton Disk Editor gives users a deeper look into the disk structure for manual recovery and repair for advanced-level disk analysis and editing.

In addition to the new Norton CrashGuard, the features FileSaver, UnErase, and Volume Recover offer comprehensive data recovery in one product. FileSaver's high-speed background protection can detect disk damage before it results in data loss. UnErase's search and recover engine quickly locates files inadvertently deleted or lost due to crashed volumes and shows potential recoverability in percentage.

Wipe Info, System Info, DiskLight and FastFind offer enhanced disk information features. These time-tested features help to quickly and easily locate files, erase unwanted files, and provide performance statistics and key system information.

Pricing and Availability
Norton Utilities for Macintosh 3.5 is available at ERP $99. Upgrades for registered users of previous versions of Norton Utilities for Macintosh are available for $49. Support for both Macintosh and Power Macintosh systems is available in a single package. A special in-box mail-in rebate is available in retail boxes for previous owners of NUM or MacTools.
