Symantec Delivers More Expertise Committed To Eliminating The Virus Threat With Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows NT Servers

New Industry leading solution provides easy, flexible administration and up-to-the moment protection against known and unknown viruses

CUPERTINO, Calif. --September 23, 1997-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the newest addition to its award-winning family of virus protection products. Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 4.0 for Windows NT Servers offers administrators flexible, automatic virus protection for Windows NT Server environments running Intel and DEC Alpha platforms.

NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers is a powerful anti-virus management solution offering up-to-the-moment protection for workstations and servers. As part of Symantec's multi-tier anti-virus solution, NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers provides users with automatic protection against known and unknown viruses and continuously updates users with the latest virus definitions and product enhancements. NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers assures users of protection against in-the-wild and macro viruses.

"With the release of Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows NT Servers, we are providing our customers with the superior virus detection and removal technology they demand, as well as with the easy, flexible administration and reliability they require to keep their servers and workstations safe from viral threats," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "In addition, our new Bloodhound technology will provide our customers the very best heuristic protection available against new and unknown viruses protecting them against not only the virus threats of today, but those of tomorrow as well."

Easy, Flexible Administration
NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers can be installed and updated remotely, easing the typically time-consuming job of distributing and updating software. This allows network administrators to quickly install virus protection, ensuring that their servers and workstations are immediately protected from the threat of viral infection.

Administrators receive alerts from any platform running Norton AntiVirus and can easily deploy flexible, customizable scans for example, once a day or once a week across remote systems. Once an alert has been received, NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers then forwards alerts to system administrators using a variety of alerting methods, including SNMP, SMTP, and network broadcasts keeping them informed of virus activity anywhere in their organization.

NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers includes LiveUpdate, a feature that satisfies the increasing demand for flexibility and simplicity in updating virus definitions. This "set-it-and-forget-it" feature enables users as well as administrators to schedule updates and receive new virus definitions automatically at designated intervals. Updates can be automatically installed to remote machines from a site within the organization without time-consuming uninstalls or registry updates.

Advanced Protection Against New and Unknown Viruses and Macro Viruses Symantec's exclusive Bloodhound technology provides the best protection available against new and unknown viruses and offers the most effective protection against the fast-spreading macro viruses. Bloodhound scrutinizes a program's overall structure, programming logic, instructions, file data, and other attributes, then uses heuristic logic to assess the likelihood of viral infection.

Comprehensive, Automatic Protection
NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers includes AutoProtect for reliable, continuous, unobtrusive background protection, and automatically scans files when they are downloaded, opened, created, modified, or run.

This "real-time" protection automatically scans for viruses incoming from the Internet or intranet, in e-mail attachments, and on floppy disks, hard drives, CD-ROMs, network drives, and even drives shared between peer machines. Web and FTP-based servers also are prevented from passing along viruses.

Norton AntiVirus Product Line
NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers is part of the Norton multi-tier AntiVirus family of products designed to cover every vulnerable point in the organization. In conjunction with NAV 4.0 for Windows NT Servers, users can purchase all of Symantec's best-of-breed products on one CD to assemble a broad security solution that protects the enterprise at the desktop and server.
