Symantec And Norton AntiVirus Awarded Contract By Telmex, The Largest Telecommunications Company In Mexico

Norton AntiVirus (NAV) is selected as the choice of protection against computer viruses by the largest telecommunications company in Mexico

CUPERTINO, Calif. --September 24, 1997-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today reported that TelMex, the largest telecommunications company in Mexico, has selected Norton AntiVirus as its choice for anti-virus protection, switching from their former anti-virus vendor, McAfee. The corporate license and maintenance contract was awarded to Symantec in late August and will include the installation of Norton AntiVirus products on all of the TelMex computers, making this one of Symantec's largest international contracts ever signed in the Latin America region.

According to a spokesperson for TelMex, "After more than a year of research, testing and evaluation of all anti-virus companies, we are pleased to award this important contract to Symantec and Norton AntiVirus. Furthermore, we are confident that Symantec will prove to be an excellent partner in protecting our company and its many employees against computer virus threats throughout our offices here in Mexico."

Key factors in Symantec winning the TelMex contract include the company's unparalleled track record in producing award-winning anti-virus software, and its reputation for quality customer service. This includes backing by the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC), which has global offices with round-the-clock virus protection on four continents. In order to stay ahead of the recent proliferation of new computer viruses – at last count more than 200 per month – SARC offers customers support through fully-staffed SARC research centers in Santa Monica, Calif., Tokyo, Japan, Sydney, Australia and Leiden, The Netherlands.

"The fact that Norton AntiVirus will be protecting thousands of telecommunications workers in Mexico is proof that Symantec's anti-virus products are leading the global marketplace," said Enrique Salem, vice president & chief technical officer of Symantec's Securities and Assistance Business Unit, "Norton AntiVirus gives users the security of knowing that they have the most complete virus protection possible, whether they are downloading files from the Internet, opening e-mail attached Word documents or accessing floppy disks."
