Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Leads PC Data's List Of Top Selling Business Software For August

Symantec Dominates AV Market, Builds on Second Quarter Success

CUPERTINO, Calif. --September 26, 1997-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world's leading supplier of anti-virus software products, announced today that Symantec's Norton AntiVirus was still the top selling business software title in the month of August, second only to Microsoft's Windows 95 upgrade. Symantec led the anti-virus market in both unit sales and dollar volume for the month of August and currently dominates the year-to-date figures. Symantec's sales also are growing at a higher rate than those of the number two vendor.

According to the August 1997 Retail Report from independent research firm PC Data, Symantec sold 65,651 units of the Norton AntiVirus product line while the number two vendor followed with sales of only 47,330 units of its anti-virus product line. In dollar volume, the comparable results are $3.8 million for Symantec and $2.4 million for the number two vendor. Symantec's unit sales grew more than 10 percent from the previous month while sales for the number two vendor dropped by more than 16 percent. Revenue from the Norton AntiVirus product line grew nearly 12 percent in August, while revenue for the number two vendor dropped by nearly 12 percent.

"We have consistently grown our sales from month-to-month because of the commitment we have to providing our customers with the highest quality products, technology and support in the industry," said Dana Siebert, vice president of the Americas, Symantec Corp. "With our exclusive Bloodhound heuristics technology included in the latest version of Norton AntiVirus, introduced this week, we continue to provide our customers with a sound investment in an anti-virus solution that offers protection against the viruses of today and the new ones of tomorrow."

The August figures follow on the heels of sales numbers from PC Data for the second quarter of 1997, during which Symantec claimed 47.3 percent of the market based on unit sales, nearly 10 percent more than the closest ompetitor. In dollar volume, Symantec claimed 51.1 percent share of the entire anti-virus market, 15 percent more than the number two vendor.

Based on recent reports from PC Data, Symantec has sold a total of 124,032 units of the Norton AntiVirus product line so far in the third quarter, while the number two vendor is behind with only 102,552 units of their comparable product line. In dollar volume, the comparable results are $7.1 million and $5.2 million respectively. Year-to-date, Symantec has sold 12.3 percent more units than its nearest competitor, which represents 26.5 percent more revenue.

The Norton AntiVirus product line includes a multi-tier strategy that integrates products at the desktop, server, Internet gateway and firewall to provide users with the most comprehensive virus detection and repair. The products provide users the security of knowing they have the most complete protection available whether downloading files from the Internet, opening attached word documents or accessing floppy disks.

PC Data's Retail Report is based on units sold by 42 retail and mail order chains, representing more than 70 percent of the total U.S. retail market.
