Federal Judge orders McAfee not to Ship Product Containing Symantec Code

CUPERTINO, Calif. --October 8, 1997-- -- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced that U.S. District Judge Ronald M. Whyte has issued an injunction which forbids McAfee Associates Inc. (Nasdaq: MCAF) from shipping products that contain code copied from Symantec. The order also requires McAfee to notify distributors that customers who purchase versions of PC Medic that contain the Symantec code must be upgraded to remove the Symantec code. Judge Whyte denied McAfee's motion to dismiss the case, and granted Symantec's motion to amend its complaint to expand the case to include additional copyright and trade secret claims.

"Symantec will continue to aggressively prosecute McAfee for violating our intellectual property rights, and anything McAfee says to the contrary is just wishful thinking," said Enrique Salem, Symantec's Chief Technical Officer and Vice President of its Security and Assistance Business Unit. A jury trial in the case has been scheduled for September 14, 1998.
