Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Chosen as Best AntiVirus Utility in 1997 by PC Magazine

Cupertino, Calif. --January 6, 1998--Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC), the world's leading supplier of anti-virus software products, announced today that PC Magazine chose Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows 95 for the "Best of 1997" award in the Utility: AntiVirus category. Norton AntiVirus was chosen as the best anti-virus solution from all the products tested by PC Magazine during the last year. The award article appears in the Jan. 6, 1998 issue of PC Magazine.

"I am very proud that Norton AntiVirus has been honored as one of the best products in 1997 to protect our customers' computers and keep them running smoothly," said Gordon Eubanks, president and CEO of Symantec Corporation. "We recognize that there are many products that can help customers protect and maintain their computers, but this type of verification from PC Magazine attests to our leading market position."

With the launches of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 in 1996 and more recently Norton AntiVirus 4.0, Symantec provides several industry innovations that focus on expanded Internet functionality, ease-of-use, consistently current protection and security. Key features include: LiveUpdate, which provides one button access to the latest virus definition updates; Striker, a next generation virus detection engine that finds elusive, encrypting polymorphic viruses; and a Repair Wizard which guides users through the sometimes intimidating process of virus elimination.

NAV 4.0 – The Next Generation in Leading AV Protection
Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 4.0 is currently the industry leader in automatic, comprehensive virus protection for Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 3.1 and DOS workstations. NAV 4.0 provides users with detection and repair of in-the-wild viruses. In addition, NAV 4.0 users receive cutting-edge protection against unknown viruses with Symantec's revolutionary Bloodhound technology. While most anti-virus scanners are only able to identify viruses that have been pre-analyzed by virus researchers, the Bloodhound system uses heuristic technology to analyze programs, detect unknown or new viruses, and enable the user to repair the infected file immediately.

NAV 4.0 introduced a new e-mail feature for LiveUpdate, called LiveUpdate Email. Just by registering e-mail addresses, users are kept informed of the latest virus information. NAV 4.0 also includes Scheduled LiveUpdate, allowing the user to automatically retrieve monthly virus definition updates, online, for free.

Also new for the introduction of version 4.0 is NAV 4.0 Deluxe, including all the new features plus a new product called, Norton Safe on the Web. This cutting-edge utility protects the workstation or laptop computer from malicious websites, Active X or Java applets. Norton Safe on the Web also includes encryption software to allow the user to safely send sensitive email messages.

pcANYWHERE32, 8.0 offers remote control, file transfer, and general communications with modem, cable, and network connections in one box, cable included. pcANYWHERE32 Version 8.0 is available for an estimated retail price of US $149.00 for a two computer (host and remote) license.
