RSA Data Conference, San Francisco, Calif. --January 12, 1998--Business travelers should beware of the disappearing laptop. According to Safeware The Insurance Agency, a Columbus, Ohio based agency that specializes in insuring desktop and notebook PCs and personal digital assistants, theft accounts for more than 65 percent of all losses to computer hardware with laptop computers as the most popular targets for thieves. Building on the effective launch of Norton Your Eyes Only version 4.0 for Windows 95, Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Norton Your Eyes Only version 4.1 which now supports Windows NT. Norton Your Eyes Only provides data protection through features such as "on-the-fly" encryption technology, that automatically decrypts files when authorized users open them and re-encrypts them when saved or closed. With theft on the rise and the Internet used increasingly for sending confidential information, this feature is necessary to prevent unauthorized viewing of information intended for "your eyes only".
"Norton Your Eyes Only offers a solution to all types of users including travelers with a laptop, the corporate user who may leave their computer unattended, those who share their computer, or work on a network," said Enrique Salem, Symantec's vice president of the Security and Assistance Business Unit. "As more business professionals travel and the use of e-mail rises, and more home users have valuable financial data on their computers, the need to protect information on the computer and in general over the Internet becomes of utmost importance."
About Your Eyes Only
Norton Your Eyes Only offers SmartLock, transparent patented "on-the-fly" encryption technology which automatically decrypts files when authorized users open them and re-encrypts them when saved or closed. Since this functionality is automatic, users do not have to remember to do these tasks and productivity is not interrupted by a third-party security program.
Norton Your Eyes Only uses RSA's public/private key encryption technology which allows users to exchange files with others without compromising the company's security.
Norton Your Eyes Only provides Windows 95 users with an optional bootup access control feature called BootLock. BootLock prevents unauthorized users from accessing the system by booting up from a floppy or the hard disk without using a valid password. Users are assured of complete security since BootLock loads before the system software, so unauthorized users can not access data on the computer, even from a floppy disk. An audit log is maintained where all unauthorized entry attempts to Norton Your Eyes Only are logged and reported to the authorized user.
Norton Your Eyes Only also provides ScreenLock which blanks the screen and blocks access to the system after a set period of inactivity or immediately with a hotkey. Re-entry into the system requires the password.
Norton Your Eyes Only Administrator provides a critical solution for LAN administrators -- remote distribution and configuration from a central location without end-user intervention. The Administrator version also provides the LAN administrator with an easy view of the entire network security program with a central database for audit logs and report generation.
Last month, Norton Your Eyes Only became one of the first cryptography products to be certified by the International Computer Security Association (ICSA). Products that become ICSA certified have met a definable quantitative level of risk reduction against a known set of threats. Buyers of ICSA certified products can be assured of getting the most secure products available.
