Cupertino, Calif. --February 17, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC) announced today that the Korean version of Symantec's Norton AntiVirus 4.0 will be included with every Samsung personal computer built for the Korean market. The OEM agreement includes all Samsung branded desktop computers, notebooks and NT workstations for the Korean market. The deal signifies an increased awareness in Korea of the need for comprehensive virus protection and reinforces the superior capabilities of Norton AntiVirus, which is fast becoming the anti-virus product of choice in Korea.
Samsung Electronics selected Norton AntiVirus 4.0 because of technical superiority and outstanding record for detecting and eliminating viruses. Norton AntiVirus' ability to eliminate macro viruses was a key determining factor for Samsung.
"With the growing number of viruses today, Samsung wanted to ensure that all users of our desktop PCs are protected by the best anti-virus software available," said Eum Kyu-ho, director of product planning at Samsung. "Symantec has proven that Norton AntiVirus is able to detect all known viruses and has achieved the highest results of all the anti-virus products Samsung tested. It was clearly the most suitable and reliable solution for including with our desktop PCs."
With an average of 10 to 15 new viruses discovered every day, keeping virus protection up-to-date is critical. An International Computer Security Association survey conducted in 1997 found that users can effectively protect themselves from viruses by simply installing a quality anti-virus product, keeping the software active and operational and by updating the software regularly.
Symantec recently installed a dedicated server in Korea to offer Norton AntiVirus users local access to LiveUpdate. LiveUpdate provides free, one-button access to virus protection updates and software updates over the Internet or via a modem. It enables customers to keep virus definitions up-to-date, protecting their computers from the new viruses that surface every day and that can infect users in Korea instantaneously through the Internet. These updates, which can be scheduled in advance, continue for the life of the product, are free of charge and fully tested at all times.
The introduction of a local LiveUpdate server will enable Korean users without access to the Internet to dial the server number in Seoul via a modem, and receive their virus definition updates for the cost of a local call.
As part of the Samsung agreement, Symantec will conduct an education program for Samsung Electronics' team to raise awareness of Norton AntiVirus' capabilities and ensure a good understanding of the protection and benefits it offers to users.
"Ideally, Symantec would like to see every computer in Korea protected from virus threats," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "This OEM agreement with Samsung has taken Symantec a step closer to increasing awareness of viruses and providing comprehensive protection for Korean PC users, whether individuals or corporations."
