Sun Selects Symantec Just in Time (JIT) Compiler Version 3.0 to Boost the Performance of Java Implementations

1998 JavaOne Developer Conference (SM), San Francisco --March 24, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the leading provider of Java™ development Tools, and Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced today that Symantec has agreed to license the Symantec Just In Time ( JIT ) compiler 3.0 for Windows95/NT to Sun's JavaSoft division for integration into the Java Development Kit (JDK™) 1.1, the Project Java Activator, and the Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

The combination of Symantec's Just-In-Time (JIT) compiler 3.0 and Sun's Java virtual machine implementation provides the fastest platform for running Java applications on the Win32 and Intel platforms. Symantec's Just-In-Time (JIT) 3.0 provides top Java performance by instantly converting Java bytecode to native code on the fly, resulting in an increased application speed of 10 to 15 times without any additional work on the part of the applet writer.

"By including Symantec's Just-In-Time compiler 3.0 (JIT) with JavaSoft's industry standard Java virtual machine for Windows, both developers and enterprise customers can benefit from the fastest Java execution available for the Windows platform," stated Mansour Safai, vice president of Symantec's Internet Tools Division.

"With the inclusion of Symantec's Just In Time (JIT) compiler 3.0 as a part of the JDK, Java technology developers and corporate customers can enjoy the fastest performance for Java applets and applications ," said John Kanagard Vice president of software products at the JavaSoft business unit of Sun Microsystems, Inc. Symantec's JIT takes bytecode and converts it into native code on the fly at runtime. The Java bytecode is usually interpreted by the Java virtual machine. When using Symantec's JIT, this bytecode is turned into native x86 machine code and executed directly instead of being interpreted, resulting in a substantial performance boost.

Tested under the industry's critically accepted benchmarking tests, this new version clearly demonstrates why Symantec's technology is the JIT of choice for major Java ISVs and developers. Running on a 120MHz Pentium with 32MB of RAM, Symantec JIT 3.0 posted an overall Caffeinemark score of 1,676 (vs. 993 for Symantec's earlier version, and 1,085 for Microsoft IE4 - higher is better), turned in a jBTYEMARK index of 10.03 (vs. 7.05 for Symantec's earlier version, and 7.87 for Microsoft IE4 - again, higher is better) and also delivered correspondingly high scores under jMark.
