Symantec and Trend Micro Cooperate to Benefit Customers

Software companies agree to share virus intelligence and cross-license anti-virus patents

Cupertino, Calif --April 8, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) and Trend Micro Inc. are to cross-license their respective patents for anti-virus applications. The agreement will enable both companies to better serve their respective customers' needs by developing solutions without hindrance of patent infringement. The companies have agreed that this cooperation settles a lawsuit filed by Trend Micro against Symantec in May 1997 alleging patent infringement. The action was also filed against McAfee, now Network Associates (Nasdaq: NETA); that action still stands.

The companies have also agreed to share virus samples. Symantec will provide Trend Micro with samples discovered by its global network of SARC centers (Symantec Anti-virus Research Centers) in the U.S., The Netherlands, Japan and Australia. In return, Trend Micro will provide samples it discovers via its research laboratories in Japan, Taiwan, People's Republic of China, Germany, and the U.S. This cooperation will ensure that customers of both companies benefit from earlier and broader virus detection.

Enrique Salem, Vice President of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit, said: "This agreement is great news for customers. They are the beneficiaries of this agreement as it results in a more open and competitive environment in which to develop solutions which meet customers' security needs."

Trend Micro's President of North American and European Operations, Irfan Salim, concurs: "This agreement puts customers first, and that's absolutely the right thing to do. By cross-licensing intellectual property and at the same time recognizing each other's patent rights and letting each other compete in a fair and open market, all computer users - particularly those in corporate environments - will benefit."
