Symantec Sponsors Telecommuting Web Site

- Knowledge Center provides a comprehensive information source for users, vendors, and consultants -

Cupertino, Calif. --June 9, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the worldwide leader in communication applications, today announced it is a major sponsor of Knowledge Centers, a web site dedicated to helping people understand specific technologies. Symantec is responsible for the Telecommuting Knowledge Center, a comprehensive online sourcebook and information center for telecommuting technologies. Knowledge Centers can be reached at www.knowledgecenters.org. The Telecommuting Knowledge Center is located at www.telecommuting.org.

The Telecommuting Knowledge Center is a not-for-profit organization whose objective is to unite telecommuting users, vendors, consultants, and other important parties into mutually beneficial relationships. The Telecommuting Knowledge Center is completely independent of all telecommuting organizations and will remain an unbiased source of quality information about telecommuting technologies.

"As telecommuting reaches unprecedented levels and continues to gain in popularity, it has become imperative that users, vendors, and consultants have a trusted source they can rely on to better understand the most pressing and timely issues relevant to the telecommuting community," said Christopher Calisi, vice president of Symantec's Remote Productivity Business Unit. "As a telecommuting solution pioneer, Symantec is uniquely qualified to assemble, organize, and disseminate valuable information that will help corporations effectively implement an intelligent telecommuting strategy into their organizations."

According to a Gartner Group report, there will be an estimated 130 million telecommuters by the year 2003. A survey conducted by Telecommute America Week shows that the number one reason why people telecommute is to be more productive. Telecommuters not only eliminate or reduce commuting time and costs, but they are also better able to manage interruptions, increase personal productivity, and maintain an improved quality of life. For organizations, implementing a telecommuting policy helps in hiring and retaining high-quality employees in an employment environment that has become exceptionally competitive.

Users will find it easy to navigate the Knowledge Centers web site. After registering and logging in to a specific technology center, a user simply chooses the type of information he or she desires. Information categories include technical terms, a library of reference material, a database of global vendor companies and their products, a database of consulting firms and their services, and a calendar of events related to the specified technology. In addition to telecommuting technology information, the Knowledge Centers web site also includes information on data warehousing, electronic commerce, the Internet, and small office/home office technologies. There is no fee for registering or obtaining information from the site.
