Symantec Enters China Market with Release of its Norton AntiVirus Solutions

CUPERTINO, Calif. - July 7, 1998 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world's leading utility and anti-virus software vendor, today announced entry into the China market with the sale and distribution of Simplified Chinese Norton AntiVirus products. Certification from the Ministry of Public Security, People's Republic of China (PRC) allows the company to sell and distribute anti-virus software to businesses and individuals, providing users with access to a comprehensive solution for successful implementation of virus protection.

With the increasing growth of Internet usage in China, personal computer users are more prone to threats of various known and unknown viruses. Symantec's Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 4.0 for Windows 95 Simplified Chinese, Norton AntiVirus for NT Server Simplified Chinese and the entire family of NAV multi-tier products are now available corporate users, large enterprise organizations and individuals to provide real-time protection for every workstation.

NAV for NT Server Simplified Chinese also includes the Norton Software Distribution utility, which automatically and remotely installs anti-virus software on every workstation across a network.

"Symantec's key objective for the China market is to work closely with MIS managers, CIOs, system integrators and large account resellers to specifically address each and every one of the key concerns faced in their challenge to implement virus protection," said Daniel Schneersohn, Symantec Corporation's regional director for North Asia. "There is a critical need to keep virus protection across a network up-to-date at all times and receive immediate alerts to virus incidents anywhere. Symantec is committed to providing its industry leading anti-virus software solution to the China market to help Chinese PC users keep their computers safe and reliable at all times."

Symantec is currently also working with Federal Software and other Chinese software retailers to contribute to the development of the Chinese software retail industry. To address the need for an entire anti-virus solution, Symantec is investing in the local retail market to offer comprehensive virus protection and security to the individual user.

Norton AntiVirus currently detects over 15,246 viruses. In May 1998, Norton AntiVirus earned Virus Bulletin's 100 percent rating for detection and repair of in-the-wild viruses in scanning tests designed to represent real-world virus incidents. It was also awarded for the second consecutive year PC World's 1998 World Class Award for best anti-virus software. Symantec's NAV has received every major editorial award since its introduction, including PC Magazine's Editor's Choice in 1998 for Best AntiVirus Utility for the third consecutive year, PC World's Best Buy award, PC Computing's MVP Award and Windows Magazine's Win 100 Award.
