Cupertino, Calif --September 25, 1998-- Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today announced that the Technical Services Division and the Computer Integration Services group of CompUSA, Inc. have become Norton Certified Service Centers. Each CompUSA service center technician will use Norton AntiVirus and Norton Disk Doctor to provide customers with comprehensive troubleshooting and repair services.
CompUSA has more than 200 technical service centers throughout the United States. These centers provide customers with guaranteed authorized repairs on most major brands of computers, both warranty and non-warranty machines. Certified technicians offer unmatched quality and quick turn-around. Each technician will use Norton AntiVirus to scan a customer's system before and after servicing to ensure the machine is free from computer viruses. In addition, technicians will use Norton Disk Doctor to diagnose boot record, file and directory structure problems.
CompUSA's Computer Integration Services (CIS) group also will use these tools when they work with larger corporate customers. The CIS group offers its corporate customers a unique technology partnership by tailoring a service to meet the specific technology needs of each company and its environment.
"By utilizing the troubleshooting expertise of the Norton products, we are adding additional value to our already wide array of technical service and support options and affirming our commitment to our customers," said Rick Fountain, vice president, Technical Services, CompUSA.
"More than 30 million customers trust the Norton brand name to keep their computers safe and reliable," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "Now customers can get that same reliability whenever they take their computers to any of CompUSA's Technical Services Centers. At these Norton Certified Service Centers, customers get the best troubleshooting and repair capabilities available on the market today from CompUSA's certified technicians."
In order to become a Norton Certified Service Center, the service technicians must go through training in two primary areas. First, they must participate in basic virus training to learn about how viruses work and how they affect computer systems as well as different anti-virus policy issues. Then, they must go through training focused on Norton AntiVirus and effective uses of the product. After training, the technicians participate in testing to assess their basic virus knowledge and skill with Norton AntiVirus. Upon successful completion of the tests, the technicians receive a Norton Certified certificate. Training, testing and certification is handled online at Symantec's Web site at www.symantec.com.
