Symantec Announces Norton SystemWorks 2.0

Market Leading Utility Suite Tightens Integration, Includes Norton Utilities 4.0 and Support for Microsoft Office 2000 Macro Security Features

CUPERTINO, Calif. - March 1, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility suites, today announced that it has advanced utility suites again with Norton SystemWorks 2.0 Standard Edition and Professional Edition. The award winning Norton SystemWorks is the industry's number one utility suite. Norton SystemWorks has already captured more than 75% of the utility suite market, a market that is growing more rapidly than any other utility category. The market-leading suite includes five powerful Symantec utilities-Norton Utilities 4.0, Norton CleanSweep 4.5, Norton CrashGuard 4.0, and a six-month subscription to Norton Web Services-in one convenient integrated suite.

Norton SystemWorks 2.0 now features an even higher level of integration across the products and includes Norton Utilities 4.0, the latest version of the most focused, intelligent problem-solving tool available. In addition, Norton SystemWorks 2.0 is the first utility suite to include Microsoft Office 2000 security features, available via Symantec's LiveUpdate, to detect and eradicate macro viruses in the latest version of Microsoft's popular Office software suite.

According to PC Data, Norton SystemWorks is already the market-leading utility suite and is outselling the competition by almost 4 to 1. PC Data also reports that Norton SystemWorks was the third best selling Windows business software in December 1998 and January 1999.

Norton SystemsWorks 2.0 represents the best value in utilities. The Standard Edition also includes a free bonus pack of noteworthy individual products such as Zip-It, Visual Page, WinFax Basic Edition, and The Professional Edition bonus pack includes these products as well as full versions of Norton 2000 and Norton Ghost.

"Symantec continues to lead the industry with an integrated utility suite that provides the tools that consumers need to keep their computers protected, maintained, and running at peak performance," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec's Security and Assistance Business Unit. "Norton SystemWorks provides the integration, compatibility, ease of use, and value that customers demand in a utility suite."

Norton SystemWorks was designed specifically to provide consumers with a comprehensive, completely integrated solution to keep their computers working. Much more than a bundle, Norton SystemWorks gives users everything they need in one box-one install, one product update center, one manual, one support line, and one emergency disk set-all with a single, easy-to-use interface. Each product in the Norton SystemWorks suite is part of the Norton family of products that were designed and developed to work together. These products were then integrated using Norton Integration Technology, thereby eliminating the problems associated with bundled offerings.

Enhanced Integration
Symantec continues to add tighter integration into Norton SystemWorks for optimum efficiency. Version 2.0 includes Norton Tray Manager, a convenient way for customers to manage the SystemWorks icons that go into their system tray. Norton SystemWorks 2.0 also features one product update center, making it easier than ever before to update the products in Norton SystemWorks. LiveUpdate will now check for updates to all of the Norton SystemWorks products at one time.

Integrated Product Suite Includes Valuable Utilities Norton Utilites, included in Norton SystemWorks, was named MVP by PC/Computing magazine during Fall Comdex, 1998. Norton Utilities 4.0 includes Norton System Check, which consolidates all the major portions of the product in one application, allowing users to quickly diagnose their systems in a single step. Version 4.0's new Registry Doctor provides extra protection for Windows and other applications by finding and repairing hidden corruption in the Windows registry.

Norton Utilities 4.0 also features Connection Doctor, an innovative modem-troubleshooting feature. Connection Doctor ensures that modem problems never prevent the user from getting on the Internet.

The new version also includes additional flexibility and choices for how users want Norton Utilities to run on their machines. WipeInfo is also back by popular demand. WipeInfo wipes free and slack space and supports government specifications for secure deletion.

Norton SystemWorks includes Norton AntiVirus, PC Magazine's perennial Editor's Choice Award winner. Norton AntiVirus 5.0offers detection and repair of unknown and new viruses, the ability to safely isolate viral files in a safe location, support for incremental or "micro" definitions, and an extensible virus detection engine that is updatable via the Internet.
