Cupertino, Calif. June 7, 1999 - LandAmerica Financial Group Inc. (NYSE: LFG) has purchased licenses for Symantec's family of corporate software solutions to expedite its upgrade to a nationwide Windows NT network and troubleshoot PC and server problems remotely, Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced today.
LandAmerica, one of the nation's largest real estate title insurance companies, has bought licenses for 7,200 units each of Norton Ghost, Norton AntiVirus and Norton Utilities SpeedDisk to improve network efficiency, increase competitiveness and capture a bigger piece of its market, said Bob Kuntz, a LandAmerica vice president.
The company, which has more than 600 offices and annual revenues of about $1.8 billion, bought Norton Ghost to speed a corporate-wide upgrade from UNIX terminals to Windows NT workstations, and to rapidly deploy Title Quest 2000, LandAmerica's proprietary title insurance underwriting management software program.
The additional purchase of a 7,000 seat license for pcANYWHERE is aimed at improving IS efficiency and reducing costs by remotely fixing PC and server problems in over 40 regional locations. "Before, our field support folks were wasting lots of time driving from office to office," Kuntz said. "Today we can get the job done much more efficiently and quickly.
"Symantec was able to offer solutions that met our needs and was the only vendor able to offer everything we needed," said Kuntz, who is also LandAmerica's infrastructure director. "We weren't interested in managing a bunch of different licenses with lots of different companies. We'll definitely do more business with Symantec as we grow."
Until recently, LandAmerica relied mostly on "dumb" Unix terminals instead of PCs in its branch offices. That meant it could take two days for an employee to sort through real estate records at a courthouse before writing a policy protecting an insured customer from outstanding liens and encumbrances on titles to a property. By contrast, PCs offer almost immediate access to LandAmerica databases and courthouse databases containing the same information.
"Now we can do in minutes what used to take days," Kuntz said. Symantec products also play a key role in creating LandAmerica's new computerized infrastructure, Kuntz added. Norton Ghost, for example, is being used to take an image of the company's standard PC configuration and distribute it company-wide to other PCs via the network. As a result, LandAmerica is able to install new software on hundreds of PCs and servers in hours instead of weeks.
The need to maintain high levels of security and protect the network from virus infection both during the transition from UNIX to Windows NT and in the future was also a major requirement. LandAmerica replaced Network Associates' Virus Scan with a license for Norton AntiVirus Solution Suite to protect its network at all levels, including firewall, email gateway, servers and workstations, from virus infection.
The single engine architecture in Norton AntiVirus also contributes to a lower cost of ownership as weekly virus definitions and detection engine updates to cope with new strains of virus can be distributed via Symantec's NAVEX technology to multiple platforms across the Internet.
About Norton Ghost
Norton Ghost enables users to copy the entire contents of one disk to another or to a disk image file. In turn, they can use the image file as a template to create copies of the original disk. Norton Ghost reduces the time to install a typical 300MB Windows 95 system from an hour with substantial operator input to just five minutes, and with no operator input. "Multicasting" allows multiple workstations to be installed at the same time, further improving efficiency. Norton Ghost can make complete backups of disks, copying even "in-use" system files missed by other backup utilities.
