New Norton Utilities for Macintosh v5.0 Keeps Macs Running at Peak Performance Levels

Number One Macintosh Utility Sets Standard for Disk Repair, Optimization, and Data Recovery

Cupertino, Calif, July 21, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in utility software for business and personal computing, today announced Norton Utilities for Macintosh v5.0, the latest version of the world¹s leading utility software for the Mac. Designed in response to user feedback, Norton Utilities for Macintosh v5.0 features refinements that take advantage of the most recent Macintosh technical developments. As a result, both power users and novices can rely on Norton Utilities to keep their Macintosh computers running at peak performance levels. Norton Utilities for Macintosh v5.0 is PowerPC native and supports the HFS+ file system.

"Version 5.0 of Norton Utilities for Macintosh builds upon our 10+ years of experience providing Mac users the most intuitive, powerful tools for maintaining their computers at optimal performance levels," said Enrique Salem, vice president of Symantec¹s Security and Assistance Business Unit.

Version 5.0 of Norton Utilities for Macintosh makes it easier than ever to keep systems up-to-date. Norton Disk Doctor, the standard in disk repair and problem-solving for Macintosh, now features Live Repair, which enables Macintosh start-up disk to easily and safely repair itself. Norton Disk Doctor also includes an Undo feature, the ultimate safety net, which allows the user to quickly and easily back out of any changes made to a disk should unusual complications or unexpected results arise.

Because Norton Disk Doctor now repairs from disk rather than from a bootable CD, updating is quick and simple via one-button LiveUpdate, which automatically detects an Internet connection or modem and connects to a Symantec server, then downloads and installs the latest software updates. Consequently, users have the most up-to-date software available. LiveUpdate will also patch or update all of the other Norton Utilities, including the product¹s world-renowned data recovery, data management and disk optimization features.

Norton Utilities for Macintosh v5.0 also features numerous other enhancements. The Main Interface now includes an entry for Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh, which allows users who own both products to access both their vital disk utilities and their AntiVirus software from the same menu. Speed Disk, the fastest and safest way to optimize your Macintosh¹s data, now optimizes B-tree directory structures to improve performance while accessing files.

An improved UnErase utility allows users to select all file types in the UnErase list. UnErase enables users to retrieve files that are accidentally deleted, obviating the need to re-create work or look through backup disks for lost files. In Norton Utilities for Macintosh v5.0, UnErase can restore both files and folders, and lets the user set filters to quickly find the exact files needing recovery.

Version 5.0 also includes FireWire device-level support, and an enhanced FileSaver utility, which now decouples volume updates and file tracking capabilities.
