CUPERTINO, Calif. and MONTERREY, Mexico Aug. 31, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) announced today that it is donating a one year license for 15,000 copies of its Symantec Mobile Essentials 2.0 to Mexico's Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM:Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey ). As part of the donation, Symantec will also provide on-site training for key support people at ITESM and those support people will receive free gold support from Symantec. The donation ceremony will take place today at 9:00 am at the school's main campus in Monterrey, Mexico and will be broadcast to the school's Mexico City campuses.
"The ITESM encourages faculty and students to use technology for academic purposes and we are excited to add Symantec Mobile Essentials to our arsenal of products that help our mobile students and faculty stay productive," said Eduardo Salcedo, ITESM director of educational Technology. "Symantec Mobile Essentials also brings the Institute a costs savings as it helps reduce the number of incoming connection and configuration-related help desk calls, while minimizing end-user frustration associated with connecting."

The 15,000 students and faculty at the ITESM who have laptop systems will be able to download Mobile Essentials 2.0 from the school's server. The software will be pre-configured for a number of common locations, such as libraries, cafeterias, quads and patios, at each of the schools 29 campuses. This will allow students and faculty to easily connect to the school network or the Internet, check email and print documents from any of these locations with just the click of a button and reduce students' need for technical support when connecting from different locations.
Students and faculty can easily add personal locations to Mobile Essentials as well, so when they work from home or other off-campus locations it is as easy and productive for them, as it is when they are connecting from a campus location.
The ITESM campuses located throughout Mexico are linked by a private communications network and four satellite networks. The Institute has more than 88,000 students and 6,000 faculty members. The school implemented a laptop requirement for all incoming graduate students in 1998 and expanded that requirement to all new students in 1999. This donation will benefit the ITESM campuses in Monterrey and Mexico City, reaching more than 15,000 students, faculty and staff using laptops.
