Solk to Head New Organization Responsible for Providing Security Consulting and Implementation Services to Large Corporate Accounts

CUPERTINO, Calif. – Dec. 20, 1999 - Symantec Corporation (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced the appointment of Phil Solk as vice president, Professional Services. Solk is responsible for establishing Symantec's global Professional Services organization to help large companies identify and implement comprehensive security solutions for increasingly complex enterprise environments.

With 23 years of experience in consulting services, Solk most recently established service organizations at companies including Vitria Technology in Sunnyvale, Calif., and Enterprise Networking Systems in Redwood City, Calif. He also was a general manager of the Pacific Northwest for Seer Technologies, based in San Francisco, where he was responsible for sales, consulting and support. Solk began his career at International Business Machines, holding a number of positions during his 15-year tenure managing relationships with customers and partners in the development of information strategies, planning and technology deployment.

"Our customers have told us they need help in assessing, designing and implementing fail safe Internet security solutions," said John W. Thompson, Symantec chairman, president and CEO. "Phil Solk has the experience to build and grow Symantec's service organization, leveraging the company's security expertise as a complement to the broad-based implementation offerings from our channel partners."

During the next year, Solk will focus on building the organization and defining the global service offerings. He plans to recruit a team of field personnel to manage consulting and on-site implementation services.

Building on Symantec's existing corporate technical support infrastructure, the Professional Services organization is expected to work in cooperation with the company's current sales force and network of channel partners through the sales process. The organization plans to provide consulting, implementation and operations services in the growing Internet security market.

Symantec's Professional Services group is expected to work with the sales force early in the sales process to provide critical consulting in areas including policy management and risk assessment. In addition, the group plans to work with Symantec's network of channel partners to provide implementation services such as installation, configuration, testing and deployment. Finally, Symantec's professional Services consultants intends to work closely with the customer to maintain the established policies and ensure the integrity of the security solution while also providing crisis-response services as needed.
