CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 5, 2000 - Symantec Corporation today announced that Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, has licensed Norton AntiVirus protection for more than 15,000 users on campus. This deal signifies the largest anti-virus software implementation at any Canadian University.
The agreement provides protection for 3,500 staff and faculty at Queen's, making Norton AntiVirus software the product of choice on campus. As part of the agreement, the 12,000 students at Queen's University will also be able to download a copy of Symantec's Norton AntiVirus software to their personal computers, ensuring that everyone on campus is protected.
Symantec's industry-leading anti-virus technology works at the gateway to provide fast, effective virus protection for networks from rapidly spreading email-borne viruses with minimal impact on network performance and maximum uptime.
Because of the increased use of computers on campus, Queen's University was looking for an effective anti-virus solution that was both easy to install and quick to update. The university was also looking for a solution that could be incorporated into its ‘'Protect Yourself' campaign by providing blanket availability to all users.
"Queen's was looking for a complete anti-virus solution that was compatible with the university environment," says Mike Smith, senior technical support specialist, Information Technology Services at Queen's University. "Symantec clearly took the time to understand our computing environment. They understood that when it comes to virus protection, the university must cope with loosely managed users. Symantec not only negotiated a site license for staff and faculty but provided one that included protection for our students as well."
The key to protecting a community of users is ensuring that everyone is protected and that virus updates circulate as quickly as possible. By working with Queen's, Symantec was able to design a solution that could easily by administered through Packman, the university's software distribution system, improving the way virus updates are managed and distributed to its users.
"Because Queen's University has a unique situation in terms of its user management system, Symantec worked closely with the school to offer it a solution that met all of its protection needs," said Michael Murphy, Canadian general manager for Symantec. "It was essential that Packman be a part of the end solution, so Symantec developed a package that could provide virus updates through Packman directly to the users from the servers at Queen's."
