Norton Internet Security 2000 Takes PC Magazine's Editors' Choice In First Internet Security Suite Round Up

Ease of Use, Adaptability, Formidable Firewall, and Comprehensive Protection Earn Symantec Solution Top Marks in Extensive, Head-to-Head Comparison of Internet Security Products

CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 13, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Norton Internet Security 2000 was singled out as Editors' Choice by PC Magazine. In the head-to-head comparison, available in the June 27, 2000 issue of PC Magazine, Norton Internet Security 2000 outperformed five desktop security products from McAfee, Network ICE, ZoneLabs, and other vendors to earn top scores and the prestigious Editors' Choice designation. Norton Internet Security 2000 is the industry's first and only fully integrated personal Internet security suite that defends against malicious hackers, privacy intrusions, and viruses.

"The Editors' Choice award is the latest in a series of distinctions Norton Internet Security 2000 has earned, including its recent recognition as the first Internet security suite to make the PC Data Top 10 list," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec's Consumer Products Division. "With around-the-clock Internet use skyrocketing, it has never been more important for consumers and businesses alike to use Norton Internet Security 2000 to protect themselves, their children, and their personal information while online."

"Among the varied approaches to securing your desktop, we felt the most comprehensive solution deserved our Editors' Choice: Norton Internet Security 2000," wrote reviewer Larry Seltzer. "Norton Internet Security 2000 offers users a simple solution that does a credible job in all the areas of security we considered for the individual PC or small LAN user."

Products were scored in five areas: setup, ease of use, adaptability, firewall security, and additional security. Norton Internet Security 2000 was the only product to earn a rating of Very Good or above in all scoring categories. "Norton's firewall has serious muscle behind a simple interface," Seltzer commented, calling Norton Internet Security 2000 "a broad, well-integrated offering centered around a highly effective firewall."

Norton Personal Firewall, included in Norton Internet Security 2000 blocks hacking attacks and alerts users to unauthorized connections and attempted intrusions. Users can block incoming connections from hackers, as well as control outgoing connections from their PC on a per application basis. With the ability to control outbound connections, users can block Trojan Horses or "spyware" applications from making connections to the Internet without users' knowledge. According to Seltzer, Norton Internet Security 2000 provides increased control over cookies, customizable privacy protection, and the ability to select which users have access to which applications.

In evaluating each product for Internet throughput, PC Magazine reviewers singled out Norton Internet Security 2000 for its exceptional traffic management. "Other products handled the incoming simultaneous mix of protocols the same way our reference machine did, whereas Norton prioritized the protocols and distributed bandwidth accordingly," Seltzer commented. "We saw dramatic increases in bandwidth allocation for File Send and FTP protocols."

A noteworthy component of Norton Internet Security 2000 is Norton AntiVirus, which received five stars and its own Editors' Choice award from PC Magazine in May 2000. Norton AntiVirus extends the Internet security capabilities of Norton Internet Security 2000 by guarding against viruses, worms, malicious Java applets, ActiveX code, and more. By offering award-winning anti-virus software along with powerful privacy and security capabilities, Norton Internet Security 2000 provides protection against a wide range of Internet threats. "Most users will find their security needs well served by Norton Internet Security 2000," concluded reviewers.
