CUPERTINO, Calif. - July 17, 2000 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced a general distribution agreement with Legend Digital China Ltd., one of the key subsidiaries of the Legend Group, to strengthen its Chinese presence. The agreement stipulates that as the authorized distributor of Symantec's software products in China, Legend Digital China will actively build up channels for sales of Symantec products and establish technological support and training centers.
Legend Digital China Ltd. is a leading Chinese distributor of software with a national reach. According to the latest statistics from IDC China, the Chinese company now owns about 30 percent of the Chinese software market. The partnership between the world's leading anti-virus technology and the leading Chinese distribution channel is expected to bring new opportunities to both parties and generate a far-reaching impact on the Chinese software market.
Symantec has supplied Chinese enterprise and individual clients with its first-class products since it entered the Chinese market in August 1998. Through this new agreement, Legend and Symantec together should be able to quickly bring the latest and most advanced products to Chinese users and contribute to the development of China's information security products.
"As the leader of Internet Security software tools, Symantec has always been at the forefront of the IT industry," said Daniel Cheng, China/Hong Kong General Manager at Symantec. "We have chosen Legend Digital China as our partner because it is a prestigious business worthy of our trust. The win-win alliance between Legend Digital China and Symantec will generate a synergy that will speed up sales of Symantec products in China. Legend Digital China will also invest in establishing technological support and training centers to allow Chinese users to enjoy direct and prompt services. We believe our partnership will create a better environment for the development of computer anti-virus and remote access technology through supply of better products, training and supporting services."
According to IDC, Legend Digital China has established its own platform that encompasses the entire country in ten leading Chinese cities. It also became the distributor of Microsoft products in 1999, in addition to its partnerships with Oracle (for its Work Group), CA (for its Unix) and ISS as well as IBM (for its NT and Lotus Note). Legend Digital China is expected to invest heavily to expand its business platform this year and take several initiatives in terms of technological support and training centers as requested by Symantec.
Legend Digital China will distribute products in both the enterprise and consumer markets on behalf of Symantec. These cover Internet security tools such as the Norton AntiVirus multi-tier solutions and the remote communications and maintenance tools including pcAnywhere and Ghost.
