CUPERTINO, Calif. - Jan. 9, 2001 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that EarthLink (Nasdaq: ELNK), the nation's second largest ISP, will make available the newest version of Symantec Security Check, which now supports both PCs and Macintosh systems, to Macintosh users who access EarthLink's Web site (www.earthlink.net). Symantec Security Check analyzes a Macintosh user's computer for potential security risks and recommends ways to secure those risks.
"This agreement not only underscores our continued commitment to serving Macintosh users, but it also demonstrates our ongoing interest in working with industry leaders to make computing safer and more secure for all consumers," said Dana Siebert, executive vice president of Symantec's Service Provider Solutions Division. "By helping users recognize the possible weaknesses in their environment and then pinpointing the most effective solution, Symantec Security Check takes a critical first step in providing personal protection for the Macintosh."
"Security has become one of the Internet's most pressing issues, and we feel that we owe it to our subscribers to give them as much peace of mind as we possibly can," said Jon Irwin, executive vice president of member experience at EarthLink. "By using Symantec's valuable tools to analyze their system and identify possible weaknesses, EarthLink subscribers will be able to have the safe, secure Internet experience they deserve."
The latest version of Symantec Security Check helps ensure that Macintosh users enjoy a safe and productive Internet experience by analyzing the level of protection on their systems and identifying potential risks. Symantec Security Check determines whether the system is susceptible to hackers by scanning for open TCP ports.
Symantec Security Check is featured under the Internet Tools section on the EarthLink Web site as well as on subscribers' Personal Start Pagesm. Users are directed to a co-branded homepage where they can use Symantec Security Check to scan their systems. If problems are discovered, users have the option of purchasing Symantec's Norton Internet Security and Norton Personal Firewall products for their Macintosh system.
