CUPERTINO, Calif. - Feb. 20, 2001, 2001 -Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security, announced today that its I-Gear content filtering solution has been chosen by Planet Internet, the largest Internet service provider (ISP) in The Netherlands, to protect children from pornographic, violent and other undesirable Web material.
Planet Internet, which has 500,000 subscribers, has agreed to an initial purchase of 30,000 licenses of the Symantec solution. I-Gear will be a value-added feature in KidsPlanet, Planet Internet's new Internet access service and portal for children, and will be delivered as part of the monthly subscription.
I-Gear combines traditional URL list scanning with Symantec's unique Dynamic Document Review (DDR) technology, which is able to assess words and phrases in context, as well as graphical information, to permit or deny access to Web sites according to pre-determined criteria. The solution's high level of flexibility means that individual Web-access profiles can be created according to the users age and other factors. I-Gear's hierarchical administrative levels permit the head of a household to determine the content filtering for each of the individual family member accounts.
"This agreement with Planet Internet is one more example of the partnerships we are forming with the world's premier Internet companies," said Gary Warren, senior vice president of Symantec's Service Provider Solutions Division. "We are furnishing tools that allow ISPs, portals and Internet carriers to provide value-added security services to their customers. By offering these services, Internet providers are able to differentiate themselves from the competition while increasing revenue and customer loyalty."
Jos Zegveld, managing director of Planet Media Group, added: "It speaks for itself how critically important it is to protect KidsPlanet users from inappropriate Web content. We are delighted to be able to work with Symantec, a known Internet security leader, on such an important aspect of our service."
KidsPlanet is a product of Planet Internet, the largest paid Internet service provider in The Netherlands with 500,000 subscribers. Planet Internet and Het Net, the free Internet service provider, are part of Planet Media Group, a 100% subsidiary of KPN.
