Symantec Opens State-of-the-Art Security Operations Center in San Antonio To Expand Global Managed Security Services

CUPERTINO, Calif. - May 1, 2001 - Symantec Corp (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet Security solutions, today announced the opening of an expanded, state-of-the-art Security Operations Center (SOC) to manage firewall, intrusion prevention, anti-virus and other security operations for companies of all sizes. Replacing the existing San Antonio facility, Symantec's newest Security Operations Center, joins the security operations center in Epsom, England, in providing Symantec Security Services' rapidly growing, global client base with 24x7x365 outsourced security management, monitoring, and response. Built to meet increasing customer demand, Symantec expects to hire up to 140 specialized staff from the Texas area to bring the new facility to capacity.

"Today's complex business environment presents increasing challenges to protecting your company's networked information assets without compromising business goals," said John Holland, vice president of Symantec Security Services. "World-class research and response capabilities, a growing team of experienced consultants worldwide and the expanded capacity of the Security Operations Center in San Antonio all combine to make Symantec Security Services a unique, global security powerhouse that can help companies solve their security-related business problems."

Provided on a subscription basis Symantec Managed Security Services deliver cost-effective, outsourced security that minimizes an organization's investments in technology and internal resources while effectively solving security problems and allowing companies to focus on their core business issues. Symantec's Security Operations Centers provides true round-the-clock monitoring with analysts able to respond to critical incidents within two minutes, as opposed to remote staff on beepers common to other companies. Experienced professionals are required to undergo an intensive internal certification process to become an analyst at Symantec and are assigned to individual managed security customers. The regular, personal contact between the analysts and the customers allows the analysts to understand the individual business needs and to make necessary adjustments to improve that client's security. Among the services offered are intrusion detection and response, Internet vulnerability, security policy compliance, anti-virus, and firewall and VPN management.

The Internet security service market is the fastest growing segment of the IT service market. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), the security services market is expected to grow to more than $17 billion in 2004 from an estimated $5.5 billion in 1999.
