Symantec Chief Technology Officer to Discuss Prevention of Internet Attacks at Industry Leading Conferences

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Aug. 6, 2001- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security technology, today announced that Rob Clyde, chief technology officer at Symantec, will speak at WebSec 2001 on Monday, August 6 in Anaheim, Calif. Clyde will also speak at the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) Network Security Conference on Tuesday, August 7 in Las Vegas. Presenting at WebSec 2001, Clyde will discuss the Anatomy of Internet Attacks at 10:30 a.m. and Strengths and Limitations of Intrusion Detection Systems at 3:30 p.m. During the ISACA Network Security Conference, Clyde will speak on the Anatomy of Internet Attacks at 9:00 a.m.

"Through intranet, extranet, and Internet access, the Web has escalated business processes to new levels of speed and efficiency," Clyde said. "However, the productivity gains that Web-enabled enterprises enjoy are tempered by new security concerns that organizations must address."

During his Anatomy of Internet Attacks presentation, Clyde will offer demonstrations of how hackers break into networks and how organizations can prevent, detect, and respond to these attacks. Additionally, Clyde will discuss how hackers gain root access and what they often do after taking control of a system.

Clyde's Strengths and Limitations of Intrusion Detection Systems presentation will focus on the purpose and requirements of an Intrusion Detection System (IDS), as well as how to use an IDS practically across a large environment. Clyde will also address the difference between network- and host-based IDS systems and how to leverage IDS strengths and typical limitations.

WebSec 2001 is created to deliver real-world solutions to the most pressing e-security challenges including, securing Web browsers, Internet connections, wireless devices, and how to protect systems from war dialing, malicious codes, and hacker attacks. The conference, which runs August 6-8, targets information security officers, directors, managers, administrators, and analysts.

The ISACA Network Security Conference runs August 5-8 in Las Vegas. The conference targets information systems auditors from the consultancy and industry sectors, as well as information systems security and control professionals. ISACA is a worldwide organization that provides up-to-date information for professionals in the converging disciplines of auditing, data processing, accounting, data security and quality assurance.
