Symantec is The First to Earn Coveted 'Designed for Windows XP' Logo with New Norton Antivirus 2002

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Sept. 4, 2001 - - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security, today announced that Norton AntiVirus 2002 is the world's first anti-virus solution to earn the Designed for Windows XP logo from Microsoft. The Designed for Windows XP logo assures consumers that Norton AntiVirus has passed a rigorous set of certification requirements and has proven to provide an optimal experience for users of Microsoft's newest operating system.

The Designed for Windows XP logo program brings hardware and software quality standards under a single logo, making it easier for customers to recognize products that are designed to deliver the best computing experiences with the Windows XP operating system.

"Like Windows XP, Norton AntiVirus 2002 is engineered to make it easier than ever for users to get the most out of their PCs," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Consumer and Client Product Delivery at Symantec Corp. "New features like script blocking, outbound e-mail scanning, and automatic virus repair make Norton AntiVirus 2002 the best, most reliable protection available for users of Windows XP."

"Microsoft is pleased to award the Designed for Windows XP logo to Norton Antivirus 2002," said John Frederiksen, General Manager for Windows Marketing at Microsoft. "Windows XP is all about taking the user's computing experience to a new level and Norton AntiVirus 2002 plays an important role in protecting that experience."

According to Microsoft, the presence of the Designed for Windows XP logo assures consumers that Norton AntiVirus will not interfere with other applications being used, will install and uninstall appropriately, will not cause the user's computer to crash, and will not overwrite files that are needed by the operating system. In addition, the software is certified to leverage various Windows XP features while maintaining stability and high functionality. For users, these capabilities result in reduced customer frustration and increased user satisfaction.

Designed to maximize protection from viruses with minimal interruptions to users, Norton AntiVirus 2002 includes a wealth of features targeted at easing the end user experience. New features such as automatic virus detection and repair, automated virus definition updating, and incoming and outgoing e-mail scanning ensure that users remain protected against even the most recently discovered threats. In addition, the inclusion of script-blocking technology to detect fast-moving script-based viruses such as the I Love You and Anna Kournikova viruses ensure that these viruses are stopped before they can infect the user's system.
