CUPERTINO, Calif. - Oct. 17, 2001- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet security, today announced that Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus are expected to ship on an estimated 24 million desktop and/or laptop computers worldwide. Under terms of the multiple OEM agreements, Symantec solutions will be pre-installed or bundled with systems from Acer Inc., Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), Hewlett Packard Company (NYSE: HWP), IBM (NYSE: IBM), Toshiba (TSBA), and MicronPC, and others. The agreements put Symantec security solutions on an expected 65 percent of branded Wintel desktop and portable systems to be shipped to home and small office segments, based on second quarter 2001 shipment data.
"Our OEM partnerships do more than simply solidify Symantec's position as the security solution provider of choice for the most discriminating system manufacturers. More importantly, they assure our mutual customers that they're protected from the moment their new systems are powered up," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president of Symantec Consumer and Client Product Delivery. "We are excited that our technology, products, and services are included with the top system vendors in the world to secure their desktop and laptop offerings against the growing Internet security threats."
According to recent research conducted by Symantec, similar OEM agreements have been successful at expanding Symantec's customer base and building brand loyalty. Research reports indicate that 68 percent of users who were introduced to Symantec solutions as a result of their OEM systems said they were very likely to continue to use Symantec products and subscription services in the future. In addition, 67 percent of the polled Symantec OEM customers reported that they were very likely to recommend Symantec products to other users.
"As businesses and individuals engage in commerce on the Internet, keep private and financial data on their systems, or share confidential information through email over public networks, they require essential information security and system protection," said Tom Matson, marketing director of Intel's' Desktop Platform Solutions Division. "The integration of Norton Internet Security, combined with the performance, power and quality for which Intel Desktop Boards are known, provides important online business protection and security features."
"Since last summer, to increase customers' peace of mind and provide the industry's most advanced Internet platforms, Compaq has been shipping both Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security software on all of its Presario Desktop PCs and Norton AntiVirus on its Presario notebooks. Both provide our customers with the confidence that their privacy and important information are protected from external threats," said Brett Faulk, Compaq's Director of Consumer Desktop Marketing.
