Symantec Expert to Discuss Intrusion Detection at The First Annual Federal Information Assurance Conference

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Oct. 31, 2001- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), a world leader in Internet Security, today announced that Fred Unterberger, a principal systems engineer at Symantec, will discuss "Intrusion Detection: A Critical Component of Defense in Depth" at the first annual Federal Information Assurance Conference (FIAC). Unterberger's presentation will explore all aspects of intrusion detection and how it is a key component of a comprehensive security policy. The presentation will take place at 1:15 p.m. EDT on Thursday, November 1, at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.

"In order for organizations to effectively secure their systems and information, they must first develop a security policy and then determine which solutions and services best complement that policy," said Unterberger. "With the growing sophistication of today's threats, such as the recent Code Red and Nimda worms, it is evident how intrusion detection is a key solution for securing enterprise environments."

Unterberger advises and educates various Federal Government customers on state-of-the-art security technology. His background includes more than 10 years of work with firewall and intrusion detection technologies. Unterberger holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree in computer science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Designed to address the real-world information assurance needs of the Federal Government and its workforce, this two-day event will provide a clearinghouse of useful information and educational opportunities for Federal managers, security practitioners, acquisition and procurement officials, accreditors, network and systems administrators, systems security officers, and certifiers. Bringing together a variety of resources from government, industry, and academia, the conference will showcase key information assurance programs and services being offered by the Federal Government, important information assurance technologies being produced by industry, and interesting and informative case studies highlighting common information assurance problems and innovative solutions.
