Symantec Firewall/VPN Appliance Earns Editors' Choice Award From PC Magazine

Five-Star Rating Puts Appliance at Top of Security List for Small Offices

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Jan. 17, 2002- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that the Symantec Firewall/VPN Appliance Model 200R has earned the Editors' Choice award from PC Magazine, published in the January 15, 2002 issue. Symantec Firewall/VPN Appliance earned a perfect five-star rating, besting competitors to top the list of firewalls for small offices.

"The Symantec Firewall/VPN 200R is a terrific choice to build a network with provision for multiple Internet connections," PC Magazine editors wrote. Symantec Firewall/VPN was the only solution to receive a rating of Excellent in the review of firewall products. In the same issue, Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2002 was named to the magazine's exclusive Best of 2001 product list.

"We are honored that the Symantec Firewall/VPN 200R has been designated by a prestigious publication such as PC Magazine as their top pick for providing enterprise-level security to smaller businesses," said Barry Cioe, product director at Symantec. "By offering small offices enterprise-class functionality, such as high-availability/load-balancing, Symantec is providing customers with outstanding real world security and performance."

Symantec Firewall/VPN 200R is an integrated security and networking device that provides easy, secure, and cost-effective Internet connectivity between locations. Editors singled out the appliance not only for its firewall protection, IPSec-compatible VPN routing, and triple DES encryption but also for its inclusion of an eight-port switch, two WAN Internet ports, and a serial port, which can be used for automatic drop-back to an external analog or ISDN modem in the event of an ISP network failure.

Editors also pointed out that Symantec Firewall/VPN 200R automatically load-balances outgoing traffic to the Internet; in addition, if one connection goes down, the other can take over Internet connectivity for the entire network, thereby ensuring uninterrupted network performance. "The analog-modem connection with automatic rollover is a great way to ensure that your company has the best chance of staying connected," editors concluded. They went on to claim, "The Symantec Firewall/VPN 200R is a terrific choice to build a network with provision for multiple Internet connections."

To meet varying network traffic and remote access requirements, Symantec Firewall/VPN is available in three models-the 100, 200, and 200R-with no per-user licensing requirements. Each model is designed to solve the firewall and VPN needs of any small office, with editors calling Symantec Firewall/VPN 100 "a bargain" for smaller networks.

Symantec Firewall/VPN 100, 200 and 200R appliances are a key part of Symantec Enterprise Security, which provides any size organization with the technology, global response and services necessary to manage its information security.
