Symantec Enterprise Firewall Earns Common Criteria EAL4 Certification

CUPERTINO, Calif. - May 21, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Symantec Enterprise Firewall 7.0 has been awarded Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL4) certification. This prestigious certification assures customers that Symantec Enterprise Firewall has gone through a long and rigorous testing process and conforms to standards sanctioned by the International Standards Organization.

"Recognizing that the Federal government is a leading proponent of Common Criteria Certification, Symantec is well positioned to provide customers like the Department of Defense and other government agencies with firewall technology that has EAL4 certification," said Vince Steckler, vice president of public sector, Symantec Corp.

Symantec was formally awarded the Common Criteria EAL4 certification for Symantec Enterprise Firewall during the International Common Criteria Conference (ICCC) in Ottawa, Canada on May 13, 2002. Symantec's recent accomplishment provides government customers, who require certification, validation that they are receiving best-of-breed security technology to protect their corporate networks.

The Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation (CCITSE) is a set of evaluation criteria agreed to by the United States' National Security Agency/National Institute of Standards and Technologies and equivalent bodies in 13 other countries. It was designed to resolve the technical and conceptual differences among existing standards for the evaluation of security systems and products. Certification to the Common Criteria EAL4 requires in-depth analysis of product design and development methodology, backed by extensive testing. EAL4 certificates are currently recognized by the following countries: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Finland, Greece, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom.

"Symantec is very pleased to be one of the first vendors to earn Common Criteria EAL4 certification for its enterprise firewall solution," said Greg Gotta, vice president of Symantec product delivery. "This certification highlights Symantec's commitment to standards that are becoming absolute benchmarks for Internet security providers looking to offer their customers the highest level of security in today's market."

The certification validates Symantec Enterprise Firewall's ability to protect enterprise assets and business transactions with one of the most secure, high-performance solutions available for ensuring safe connections with the Internet and between networks. Recognized for its superior protection against blended threats such as Code Red and Nimda, Symantec Enterprise Firewall provides advanced full-inspection engines and automated system hardening to further protect corporate networks from these types of attacks.
