CUPERTINO, Calif. - Aug. 7, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that it is assisting with HP's increased effort to protect its consumer desktop PCs from virus infection during the manufacturing process.
Beginning in September, Symantec security solutions will scan HP machines to ensure that they are free of any viruses before the PCs are boxed and shipped out to consumers. Furthermore, random samplings of the machines coming off the manufacturing lines will undergo a final quality assurance test using Symantec's Antivirus Command Line Scanner for one last comprehensive check against virus infections.
"HP is serving its customers well by taking extensive precautions during the manufacturing process to protect its consumer PCs from any virus infiltration," said John Schwarz, president and chief operating officer, Symantec Corp. "The partnership between Symantec and HP in this instance epitomizes the type of effort Internet security providers and computer manufacturers must make to ensure the strongest security measures possible on behalf of individuals and enterprises."
"Taking this extra step to provide our customers with the ‘cleanest' machines possible underscores HP's long-standing commitment to outstanding customer service," said Tom P. Anderson, director of marketing, HP's consumer desktop PC division. "Symantec was able to provide the scaleable solutions we needed for us to meet the goals of this project."
