CUPERTINO, Calif. - Aug. 21, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that several of its security experts will be participating in the SECTOR 5 Summit, “The Global Summit Exploring Cyber Terrorism and the Targets of Critical Infrastructures.” SECTOR 5 Summit is a first-year, business-to-business (B2B) executive conference and exposition dedicated to exploring cyber terrorism and potential critical infrastructure targets. The summit, which is taking place at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C., will focus on information technology security such as biometrics, contingency planning, intrusion detection and protection from cyber terrorism.

The SECTOR 5 Summit will open the first two days with simulated cyber attacks of five critical infrastructures: Transportation; Energy, Utilities and Water; Banking and Financial Services; Telecommunications and Information Services; and Vital Health, Safety and Emergency Services. Once the simulated attack session is complete, critical infrastructure executives will gather for a general session, Mastermind Analysis and Discussion, to share intelligence among the various sectors. Amit Yoran, vice president, global managed security services at Symantec, will participate in the first Mastermind Analysis and Discussion from 11 a.m. – noon today.

Additional SECTOR 5 Summit speaking engagements include:

• Louis Carpenito, vice president of infosecurity business strategy at Symantec, and Tim Belcher, vice president and chief engineer at Symantec, will both participate on the Intrusion Detection, Response and Prevention panel from 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m. Carpenito will focus on the Banking and Information Services sector while Belcher will focus on the Energy, Utilities and Water sector. Panelists will discuss securing systems and networks from the inside, as well as the outside. The panelists will talk about methods and technologies intruders use, as well as best practices enterprises can incorporate to combat security invasions.
• Belcher will also participate in the Mastermind Analysis and Discussion from 11 a.m. – noon on Thursday, August 22.
• Stephanie Fohn, vice president, Symantec Security Response, is participating in the New Products, Developments and Advances panel, as part of the Banking and Financial Services sector from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 23. Panelists will discuss new technologies in hardware, software, services and applications that will prevent and combat cyber-terrorism.
