CUPERTINO, Calif. -- September 3, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced the release of Symantec Enterprise Security Manager (ESM) for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) 1.0. Symantec ESM for HIPAA is a policy module that seamlessly integrates into Symantec ESM (5.5 or 5.1), a feature-rich vulnerability management solution offering IT security administrators the ability to proactively reduce corporate risk by automating and centralizing their security policy compliance management and security assessments.
Based on the HIPAA security standard 142.308, Symantec ESM for HIPAA provides pre-configured HIPAA-based security policies, allowing organizations to audit their environment for HIPAA security standard compliance. The HIPAA policies are designed specifically to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data.
"Healthcare providers and organizations with access to health data must be compliant with the HIPAA security and privacy regulations," said Ronald Van Geijn, director of product management, intrusion prevention at Symantec. "Using Symantec Enterprise Security Manager and ESM for HIPAA, these organizations can swiftly and cost effectively assess their environment for HIPAA security standard compliance."
Symantec ESM and ESM for HIPAA are backed by Symantec Security Response, which delivers knowledgeable, proactive security protection through product security policies and best practice guidelines that can be updated and distributed through automated processes. Additionally, Symantec Security Response provides rapid reactive security protection through its incident response program, including emergency signatures, definitions and policies, and outbound communications, such as alerting services.
Symantec ESM for HIPAA supports multiple operating systems such as Windows NT/2000/XP, Solaris 2.6-8, HP-UX 10-11, AIX 4.x and Red Hat Linux 6.2-7.0.
The primary objectives of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 were to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system, help providers access patients’ health care information, standardize the way information is handled, and ensure that patient health information remains strictly confidential. The “Administrative Simplification” aspect of HIPAA requires the United States Department of Health and Human Services to develop standards and requirements for maintenance and transmission of health information that identifies individual patients. All healthcare organizations that maintain or transmit electronic health information must comply.
