CUPERTINO, Calif. – Sept. 17, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced that Brian J. Finan, director of Strategic Programs and Homeland Security, will participate in a panel discussion entitled “Systems Security: The Network is the Nation,” at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Homeland Security Technology Expo. The panel discussion will take place from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at the D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C.
The panel will immediately follow live television coverage of the U.S. National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace, scheduled to be introduced at Stanford University by Special Advisor to the President for Cyberspace Security, Richard A. Clarke, at 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m. EDT. Finan will address the security awareness and practices expected of individuals, in his remarks, as well as the unique public/private partnerships underway to secure critical infrastructures in sectors such as energy, telecommunications and financial services; the vast majority of which are operated by commercial firms.
"Critical infrastructure protection does not end with government and industry," said Finan. "At a time when home computers are staying online longer and broadband penetration is growing, individuals represent an increasingly critical network segment that needs adequate security practices in place to prevent users from becoming unwitting collaborators in coordinated cyber attacks."
Finan leads Symantec’s work securing large government IT operations, such as the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI). His background includes more than 20 years of federal service in U.S. Army intelligence, where he participated in numerous counterintelligence operations during the Cold War. Finan is also a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College.
Hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce, in association with the Office of Homeland Security, the Homeland Security Technology Expo will provide an opportunity for federal procurement officers, law enforcement officials, Congressional staff and others to learn more about technology products currently being developed to strengthen the defense of the nation.
