Information Security Selects Symantec As An Industry Influencer

Explosive Growth and Extensive Product Portfolio Distinguish Symantec From Competition

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- December 18, 2002 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq:SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, has been recognized on Information Security Magazine’s “Influence List” as a company that will have great impact on IT security over the next five years.

The editors at Information Security, one of the security industry's top publications, considered the influence IT security vendors have on how "security gets done" and based their selection of vendors that will frame the future of IT security on the following criteria:

  • Unique value proposition: Innovative technology or business strategy marks a significant departure from conventional approaches/methodologies.
  • Strong market position: Large current or prospective installation base. Measurable market demand for product offering.
  • Defined execution path: Sets attainable goals and has clear strategy for reaching them.
  • Likelihood of success: Has financial means, intellectual property and executive talent to translate mind share into market share.

According to Andrew Briney, editor-in-chief of Information Security, Symantec’s growth plan has executed right on target. "In just a few short years, Symantec has exploded from a $100 million company to the industry’s largest vendor, with more than $1 billion in annual revenue."

The publication also noted Symantec’s vision of the enterprise and consumer security markets over the next five years: "In large enterprises, the company is pushing an integrated security management system that covers policy and configuration management on multiple platforms; heterogeneous security device management; log, alert and data mining and consolidation; and granular management of client software on devices of all shapes and sizes. For the SMB and SOHO markets, Symantec is aggressively pushing its all-in-one security appliances. And for the consumer market, the company is to attempting to make its PC firewall and desktop management software as common as its AV software is today."

The "Influence List" appeared in Information Security’s 5th Anniversary and Annual Crystal Ball Issue in November.
